and you come across something like this, what do you make of it?
i checked the pops and didn't even see any cams, let alone dcams. (for braided hairs)
perhaps it is a mis-designated and actually a pattern or an SP?
obviously it is almost certainly just an imaging technique byproduct BUT, then i looked further down.

Does this catalogue offer any leads that you can data dive? Pics credits, author?

it kinda started from @Aegis3 's wonderul and generous efforts.
i am not necessarily looking for a specific answer but kinda just seeing where (if at all) it can go.

When someone says they "checked the pops" and did not find what they were looking for it naturally assumes that all coins have been entombed in plastic. That is not the case. Especially in the case of early coppers, many great coins are still out there in the raw.

i concur and part of the reason i did check to see if any were entombed. gotta figure if there are some cam/dcam large cents, SOMEONE would have one in there for registry purposes, at least. i do also concur, the pops are not the end-all-be-all. also, i would have LOVED to came across a pro image of one which was my initial motivation.

That 1841 Large Cent looks incredible. It photographs the same way as the obvious proofs....the look of the plate suggests it is a RB coin. @LanceNewmanOCC what sale is this from?
Some of these old catalog pictures are goosed. I ran into one picture in an old coin book that this reverse on the 1797 half dime perfectly struck. I don't think that's possible. This coin is in an old NGC AU-53 "fatty holder." This how this reverse always looks. I have never seen a fully struck example. I think that the picture was a fabrication.
see the link above.
