What Will Be The Top APR For 2023
I was looking through the PCGS Jan-Feb magazine and it has an article on the top 20 APR's for 2022. According to the article in the top spot was the:
1821 Capped Bust Half Eagle, PCGS PR65CAM at $4,620,000. (HA Sept 2022)
With the recent APR for the 1870-S $3 SP50 (engraved) of $5,520,000. (Jan 2023) it would have been the top APR for 2022.
Do you think this will be the top APR for 2023 or will there be another to come along and get the top APR for 2023?
Of course this is just guess work and perhaps it falls into the who cares category.
.
.
On a side note the article listed 15 of the top 20 APR's for 2022 sold by HA and 5 by SB. Correct?

Just depends on what hits the market. If a super rarity - like the 1870-S $3 SP50 (engraved) - or even more rare hits the auction block, it could easily break that record. There are some deep pockets out there... Cheers, RickO
Yes on the 'just depends on what hits the market' and what I kind of meant by guesswork. I kind of think that this $5,520,000. might be the high APR for 2023 just due to limited number of coins that could sell above that amount and then would need to be auctioned and not sold privately.
I expected HA to have the most top APR but was a little surprised at 75% of them (15 of 20) and then all the other auction companies not getting any except SB.

Initially I did not think this unique 1873-CC dime would make it. But watching some bidding and with it currently sitting at a hammer price of $ 3,000,000 (or $ 3,600,000. all in) it could have a chance. Still thinking it will fall short but some of the live bidding has been quite active.
Would need to get to $ 4,600,000. hammer for the $ 5,520,000. all in.
The half dime went from hammer of $ 1,725,000. to hammer $ 2,600,000. So the 1873-CC would need even more live bidding. That is assuming it does not jump up more before tomorrow's live bidding. Which it could.

i have some guesses but i really need to do some legwork to see when the last time either the examples i was thinking of sold or a different example of the same type/denom/grade. i'm not entirely certain i'm going to get to it in a reasonable time frame though. i was/am considering about half a dozen examples.
i will say after doing a lil bit of work on it that when i look to see the 1933 saint NOT at the top of the list, really maybe even a couple/few slots down, kinda blows my mind now to think about it. that coin has virtually everything that high-end buyers would want going for it. (except some mild risk the gov would swoop in under some guise or another)
as to your question about heritage/sb, i don't know but i do know that heritage hasn't sold all the highest priced realized coins. a lot but not all.
JUST to confirm since you emphatically specify APR, private treaties do not count? if not, i understand as we really are taking the word of certain parties in those instances.
also, just to verify, strictly us coins? (i've seen some foreign stuff with some 7 figure results i'm pretty sure)
edited to add:
that is odd. why don't i recall this hammer price as it wasn't that long ago!
(not sure if elite will put it back up for sale but not likely as stated probably only getting rid of dupes)
1933 $20 just shy of $19 mil
https://www.pcgs.com/auctionprices/item/1933-20/9195/7781305912275707553
just did some more checking and not many of the top choices of mine have even sold at heritage, ever. weird i never really noticed it was that many until now.
but here is one that could be up there if it pops back into the available category. $20 1861 MS67 paquet rev. sold 2021 for $7.2 all-in.
i was thinking about one of the $1 1804 Proof Dollars class l - The Sultan of Muscat-Watters-Brand-Childs-Pogue example.
these are really just guesses as studying some of the top registries and when certain coins sold could eliminate some choices.
the result of the 70-s $3 really puts into perspective it's hammer size once you try to find coins that could out-value it in 2023! (good topic choice @lilolme )
sheesh, whatever you do, don't do a search engine search for the most valueable coins to try and come up with ideas as 90% of that info is obviously done by those that don't know what they are doing. almost as bad next in line are youtube videos as if that even needed to be said.
edited to add: i'll have to think about patterns next.
What's APR?
Why does everything have to be abbreviated now a days? Please just take a little more time and spell it out.
auction prices realized, in this context, it is a rather large part of the pcgs machine with a HUUUUUGE database of collections sold as well as the pieces/prices and sometimes pics.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)

a birch cent or perhaps some iteration of j1, j2 etc. (almost always fan favorites)
i had another good choice but too many tabs and it is too late. i'm spent.
It looks like by the end of the week there will be another $1M plus coin (HA) to add to the list for this year. With the Lincoln at GC earlier that will be 12 (unless I missed some) so far this year. Per the noted pcgs article there were 15 all of last year (and 4 at 900K or more). So it would appear the top of the market is alive. Of course it could all stop / end and no more for the year.

Back again.
Two more million dollar plus via the Bass part 3 through Heritage auctions tonight (May 4). But neither came close to the above previous high for this year.
I think it is now 14 million $ plus for the year (but I could have easily missed some)
Both coins started the live auction around 500K but then....
First one hammered at $1,450,000. ($1,740,000. all in)

And this one was over the million $ plus level some time ago. It was just a matter of where the final number would be.
So that is at least 15 million $ plus for 2023 (plus any I could have easily missed).
It was on last years million $ plus list having sold at Heritage Jan 2022 for $ 3,360,000. (all in)
1795 Capped Bust Right Eagle, MS63+

It took a little bit of a auction price beating this time from the above previous number.
So it was back at auction tonight at GC. The hammer was $ 2,410,000. ($ 2,651,000. all in using a 10% buyer fee)

18%![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
Of course, there are likely private transactions that you'll not likely be able to include in your running tabulation.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
I thought Annual Percentage Rate.
Then I thought to myself, I may have it with the huge raw error coin lot I bought.
Then I read what the OP meant.
As you said 'Of course'. But this was/is about APR's. What got me started was as noted in the OP, a pcgs article on 2022 top APR's combined with the early 2023 auction of over $5M and thinking it might be the largest for 2023 as it would have been top for 2022. This happening in the first couple weeks of 2023. Then when the other nine 1 million $ plus hit early on, in Jan, it was curious since there were only 15 all of last year (a few just missed though). So I thought if I saw one I would note it.
https://www.pcgs.com/news/pcgs-graded-top-20-most-valuable-us-coins-sold-in-2022
It might be roughly similar to someone asking 'What is this worth' and some saying guides are guides but check the auction results (or eBay....). There are likely many private transactions but more difficult to know those. Unless one is the buyer, seller or has some confirmed (private) information. So APR's it is.

.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=D0FPxuQv2ns - Ruby Starr (from 'Go Jim Dandy') Maybe I'm Amazed

Wasn't thinking of eBay transactions, but whale private transactions - think Elite Collection and his working with Heritage to buy high end saints or clients of Laura Sperber, etc.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
I totally understand that. I was giving an example of how private transactions are unknown. But again those don't matter because as noted this and the previous pcgs article are about APR's. Somewhat often someone might post about an auction result (AU walker sets record, S.B. red cents go big, toned Morgan big $....) and on most all of these one could say - Of course we don't know about private transactions. So then, back to the auction theme and comparisons. Again just tracking the APR's over a million and in relation to the previous pcgs article about 2022 top APR (which was also noting they were all pcgs and the real intent of that article).

It’s anybody’s guess. Especially when you have wealthy buyers bidding on big ticket material. Perhaps somebody needs a certain key date and will bid up whatever it takes.
Got a HA advertisement brochure for ANA auction and it had a short paragraph on the last Bass part 4. Mentioned this $20 1907 PR69 extremely high relief / ultra high relief as one lot. Could it be a contender for the top auction lot of 2023 ($5,520,000 so far)? PC guide is $5M.

And also a $5 1829 PR66+ CAM small size. This pc# is not listed in the price guide but does have a coinfacts page. Similar ones are PC guide around $4M and a 1825/4/1 PR67 CAM one sold at SB in 2022 for about that number. Would need an extra push to go for the top but might go the other way.
