Welcome! After having put together some nice Type Sets, and then about a half dozen or so regular sets, I decided to put together an Indian Head Cent set. This set has given me more fun and pleasure than anything else in 50+ years of collecting!
Very nice IHC..... be careful, the IHC bug is a serious condition, while not fatal, it can be long term and limit your activity in other areas. Cheers, RickO
Very nice IHC. I built 2 sets of them and loved every minute of the time spent. Get Richard Snow's books on Attributing them and you will enjoy and learn even more. Congrats.

I had that bug in high school. I finished the date and mint set eventually, but lost a lot of money on it when I sold. The market fell markedly on them in the early 1970s.
It's a neat set that covers an interesting time in American history. The "rubber meets the road" with the dates from 1866 to 1878. That is the financial heart of the set.
Here are three 1864 varieties.
Copper-Nickel
Bronze - Not as common as people claim, in my opinion.
1864-L. James Longacre signed his work after he slightly modified the master die.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
I have several of them as type, along with a nearly completed Dansco album of VF and up pieces. Always liked this series, it was the one to start after you got stuck on your 1909-1940 Lincoln album.
Awesome! It's the second set I ever attempted and came one coin short of completion... the 1877. I still have a fondness for the issue and will likely have one on my Box of 20 at some point. Nice addition!
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
My father passed when I was 11 YO and I now had possession of his Indian cent collection. All coins which he found in circulation but not complete. For many years I felt my duty was to complete his set. Eventually, I decided to let his set remain as he collected those coins out of circulation and never even knew a coin dealer.
Instead I put together a set of IHC PR coins in his memory, and I know that he would be totally blown away by this set that I dedicated to his memory. Specifically, I collect the toned proofs that have evolved over the past 100+ years. While there is not a thing wrong with RD copper, after 100+ years copper coins seem to establish their own identity. Most of the time the toning is not very attractive, but there are gems worth owning:
But be careful as toned examples are much more difficult to find than their RD counterparts. You have enertered into one of the most interesting collections in all of numismatics.
@winesteven - here's the full photos in the slab. I feel like I have a huge advantage with Indian cents as I live about a mile away from Rick Snow's shop! I'll be paying him a visit very soon. I know I can't get an eagle eye sticker on an ANACS graded coin but I'd still love his opinion (and yours as well). I feel like I'm in the "I know just enough to be dangerous to myself" category but I'm just getting what I think I'll enjoy or what I like at this point. I guess that's what collecting is all about...
@AndyK , It’s tough to say. If the ‘09 doesn’t sticker, I believe it’s because of the cheek scratch and the carbon on the neck. BOTH are in very visible areas of the coin. As you note, ANACS graded coins won’t Photo Seal, but as he gives his opinion on that coin, once again the scratch on the cheek is in the most visible area - the eye gets drawn to it.
Both coins have several positive things going for them, such as great strikes, and color. They are indeed lovely coins! However, as I occasionally write in the forum, when it comes to CAC and Photo Seal stickers, it’s like that young reporter interviewing Mrs. Lincoln when he asked, “So, other than the assassination, how was the play?”
Separately, as us old-timers used to say, living that close to Rick Snow - “you’re a lucky duck!” Learn whatever he’s willing to teach you, but first buy FROM HIM (and read) his Whitman/Bowers book. Then do as I did when I met Rick in person five years ago - ask him to write a personalized inscription in his book for you, and have Kenny (or someone else) take a photo of you with Rick, with you holding his book!
Enjoy, and happy hunting!
Steve
A day without fine wine and working on your coin collection is like a day without sunshine!!!
@winesteven - Good advice. I even found amazing 1906 PF with amazing toning. Had a really great visit with Rick (who I met before but had no idea WHO he really was). Also got a great 1906 PF with fantastic toning - (updated trueview photo)

@OldIndianNutKase - those are some beautiful coins. I'm amazed at how the toning can enhance the coin. I clearly have a lot to learn

If you think you have the bug now… just wait until you start on varieties!
IHCs are a goldmine for variety collectors like few other series.
"You can't get just one gun." "You can't get just one tattoo." "You can't get just one 1796 Draped Bust Large Cent."
