Just picked up a new 36 Proof Cent!
This one has some actual contrast, quite a looker! Beautiful glassy fields below subtly textured devices, definitely an early strike. The obverse is basically dark red/rb, the reverse has some toning around the periphery, it is designated RB. That works for me as otherwise it would have been priced well above my comfort zone.
Very glad I picked this one up! I might try to cross it someday.
Paging @FlyingAl because this is his kind of coin. Also @winesteven .
Sorry about the scratches on the holder, I have not had a chance to polish them out yet.
Enjoy!

Beautiful Lincoln and certain a very tough one to find. Looks close to cameo.
Gorgeous!!!!
Be aware if you cross it to CACG, you cannot use it in your PCGS Registry sets. But CACG will have two Registries, each of which will accept their own holder, as well as coins holdered by PCGS and NGC. The first of their two Registries will hold coins with or without CAC approval. The second one (more restrictive) will hold coins in their own holder, plus any other holder with a CAC sticker.
Enjoy that beautiful coin!!!!!

That's pretty darn cool looking and pretty darn scarce with real contrast. Great snag!

Put some more pics up once the slab is polished. Im sure it looks much better than those photos.

Sweet Lincoln!
Congratulations
Looks like the CA-1 die pair. Documentation:
1936 Proof Cent
CA-1
Possible Use Dates: September 15th, unknown date (incomplete die records).
Die Markers: Die scratches extending from the right upright of the T in TRUST, impression midway up the N in CENT.
Figure one: Die scratch extending from the first T in TRUST. It is expected this wore away upon repolish.
Figure Two: Impression midway up the N in CENT. This was likely caused by a foreign substance entering between the coin and planchet and remaining on the dies for a time. Every known cameo proof has this impression.
Description and Coins Possible: There appears to only be one die pair capable of striking proof cameo 1936 cents, but since die records are missing for a large part of the year, one cannot be sure of this. The cent is the only currently known 1936 cameo proof, which makes it quite rare in the series and it commands a substantial premium. Less than twenty contrasted pieces are likely to exist today.

Chris, GREAT COIN! I grade it a CAM. Remember, NGC is the only current service that grades RB CAMs, so PCGS will not call it a CAM. No idea about CACG. I don't understand this policy, but it exists. If you want to resend it, I'd recommend NGC (and resending it too
).
Many posters may not recognize the rarity of this coin - it's likely an R6. Very difficult to find and the only 1936 denomination with any sort of noticeable obverse/reverse contrast.

Now THAT is one really nice cent!!! Great CAM look.... almost anyway. Tough coin, especially in that condition. Cheers, RickO
Beautiful.

@FlyingAl Nice writeup! It does appear that this is from the same die pair that you have pictured.

Did you win on die pair vs cost?
A 1936 in PR66 is very special but with the contrast of this coin it is definitely a cameo. Not sure why PCGS will not consider toned coins as CAM. I have a 1950 Jefferson PR67DCAM that is significantly toned. And your new coin is mostly RD, but NGC has it right on the CAM issue. Mirrors and contrast are not exclusive to RD copper coins.
I think so?... I paid more than recent 66RB auctions but I think the coin is nice enough to justify it.
The selling company made a couple hundred compared to the recent sale of this coin on Heritage but I am fine with that. I have no idea how HA was able to light up the coin like they did, I just get massive holder reflection if I try.

I also just found that the same coin was previously certified by NGC, looks like it may have gone in for either conservation or regrade as the old cert is no longer valid.

Heritage does some wonky things with photography. I think you did perfectly fine, this is probably a $8k coin in a CAM holder. I personally think that even in its current holder as a near CAM it should be worth around half of that, but the market doesn't necessarily agree.
With the current photos at the top of this thread you should be able to easily get $2k to $2200 IMO.

Sadly the market frequently doesn’t view it that way. Near cameo coins sometimes fetch small or no premiums, and it is a niche where if you’re picky, you can get a lot of eye appeal for your buck. There are those that won’t see past the plastic and lack of sticker. There are also many who won’t see anything beyond the label or registry points. To sell these for a fair price you need a decent amount of time, knowledge of where to move it, good marketing, and sometimes a little luck. There don’t appear to be many collectors putting together cameo or near cameo sets.
Really nice example!!
Exactly, and it's quite unfortunate. Some of these proofs in CAM or near CAM are really rare. I wonder if it's due to the rarity that few people are putting sets together.
I don't think there will be any problem getting a premium price over a normal 66RB with the images at the top of this thread - it clearly has quite a bit of eye appeal both with color and contrast.
I do find it hilarious that you can take this coin in the current holder and buy it for a little under $2k, but if it's regraded with a CAM designation you can expect to at least double that price. Three letters on a slab and double the price!
I suppose that's a big reason I'm trying to catalog all of the cameo dies - so collectors who want coins like these can identify and purchase them for a fraction of the cost of a CAM. I've seen several coins in non-designated slabs that can blow away the designated coins. You just have to find them.

Great coin. Remember many of those in PCGS or NCG RD holders are no longer Red. I've been looking for an accurately graded RB coin as well. Great find !
That is a great looking cent.... I like wheaties in that condition.
Just to quick update here, this coin crossed to PCGS as PR66RB. I will likely be replacing the 65RD that I have in my registry set with this one, It is a nicer coin but they are both weighted the same so no overall change in set points. Was hoping for that + but a straight cross is fine too.

Why didn't you send it to NGC to maybe get that CAM?

Based on previous auction appearances the coin has already been to NGC twice, I doubt a third time would have yielded different results. My thought is that it's probably just not quite cameo enough to call it one.
I also wanted to be able to use it in my PCGS registry set and I like the PCGS holder better.
