Just Thinking about authentication

Legends just auctioned in their Regency Action 56 "The Magnificent Seven" - 7 Legendary earlier holders of PCGS and NGC. This got to me to thinking .... if the coins are authenticated by PCGS and NGC ... who authenticates these early holders since the bidding was for the holders and not necessarily the coins. Oh well ... just thinking

I think there's enough manufacturing pups to get that done right. Peace Roy

Where is that semi-recent thread with the slabbing of the slabs.

NGC sort of does that with GSA slabs. OF course, then you have to authenticate the slab of the slab. That inevitably leads to slabbing the slab of the slab of the slab. But of a Chinese puzzle box that no one will remember what's in the center.
I have not participated in the collection of slab generations. I have slabs I got many years ago... no idea if they are unique or not. My interest lies solely with the coin. Of course, people collect all sorts of things... from beanie babies to belly button lint... so, have fun and collect what interests you.... Cheers, RickO
It sounds like there is now an opening for a sticker company to begin authenticating the slabs themselves!
FWIW, PCGS offers the same for 'GSA Morgans/Ike Dollars' (i.e., encapsulate the plastic case).

Yes, of course. For some reason my default was to say NGC because I was thinking of the simplicity of just putting a band around the slab.
In the case of certifying the slab of the slab of the slab... you just need a sticker... and then a sticker of a sticker of a sticker.
The real solution is the NFC chip with a random authentication code that is constantly changing. Counterfeiters wouldn't know the algorithm and couldn't counterfeit them. Of course that wouldn't work for online sales, but through reputable sellers, you could trust the seller to do the verification. Even on ebay, the seller could provide a video of the authentication scan.
I would think that an outfit like Legends could tell if the holders are legitimate.
