1866 Shield with rays

It says cleaned. I don't see it. It will soon reside in my 7070.

I don't see it (cleaned) either and it looks nice to me. I've always liked that reverse design. It will look sweet i your 7070.

I believe they are referring to the absence of the lines at the top of the shield.... Not sure that is due to cleaning though... could be other issues... Might want to resubmit for reconsideration. Cheers, RickO
These were hard to strike. There are a lot of MS examples that lake the full lines as well.

cleaned coins don't always have the PLS. (parallel line scratches referred to as cleaning, wiping, whizzed etc)
this is because there are myriad ways to clean coins, unfortunately.
BUT having said that, doesn't mean this coin wouldn't straight-grade. we'd need better pics (imo) to make as accurate an assessment as possible.
neat coin either way.
it does look like the surfaces have something on them but they graded coins a bit different 30 years ago than today.
If all your coins in the album looked like this one, you would have an exemplary album. Beauty, enjoy the album. BTW, probably the shield lines aren't missing, just full of the rustlike coating that developes on this metal. You can see several MS66's and up with a similar look and "lack" of visual lines. JMO

Based on those pictures, I believe this one might straight grade today. I see evidence of a wipe and some dip residue? on the lower obverse, but what the TPG's consider market acceptable has changed since this was graded ... IMO

That coin would be market acceptable to most collectors and dealers. I don't see cleaning based on the photos. I think it is a nice coin!
I like the coin and it will look great in a 7070 set. Like @pursuitofliberty I think that the obv lower left shows some residue of some type, perhaps the graders saw it as dip residue and went the cautious route.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
Me, I'd look to the reverse. And magnification. Still an attractive nickel.
I like the design of that, nice coin 🪙
Very nice looking coin, looks original from my glance.

It looks good to go. I'm with you. I have no problem breaking coin out for albums, especially the 7070.
However, I love those old small ANACS soap bar slabs and have never broken a coin out of one of those.

I've broken several out of the small holders, but I would never break one out of the earlier ANA holders. Here is it with the rest of the row in the 7070.
