Shield Cents - Shiny New versus Not So

Several years ago, don't recall when, i started putting shield cents in a jar when I got them in change. The Shiny New ones went into one jar and the Not So into another. If someone were to be more critical or grade the Shiny New, then some/many would be AU58 or maybe an occasional 55 but in general they are Shiny New looking. The Not So have clear wear, loss of Red, discolored, stained, goop, damaged or similar. Several of the Shiny New have lost their Red but I am not digging them out.

The jars are almost full now but I can shake them down and get several more months of shield cent change into them. I thought the result was kind of interesting. I keep thinking I will start getting more Not So shield cents than Shiny New but so far - Not. It seems these shield cents don't circulate much before getting to me.

I kind of wonder when people get a shield cent in change if they just throw it into a jar.

I use them in my gumball machine- shield, memorial, wheat, whatever.

I hate shield cents. When I find them roll searching I give a quick look for DD's or errors then just roll them back up. I feel one of the worst looking coin changes the Mint has made lately for a long run circulation series..

PS - My beautiful full red, shiny sheilds I have pulled from rolls now look like crap after a few months being in a 2x2. I'm guessing the copper plating is so thin it does nothing to protect the zinc core from staving off the problems Zinc has with oxygen .

And this has always been a sidekick in my memory............

I think you get more use out of them than 99+% of the people.
I just have a large paper weight.

Never really thought about it. I just separate them and put them in a jar until the next time I get some in change and then repeat.

I have a medium-sized jar of 2017-P cents. I just thought the P mint mark was neat. I don't save any others.

I have been taking the cents from change and putting them in jars for a long time. When the shield cents came out sometime later I thought how about putting those in a separate jar but only the Shiny New ones. The memorials went into another jar but I also put the Not So shield cents into a separate jar. I then noticed after years that I get about 10 Shiny New shield cents to every one Not So as can be seen by the size of the two jars of shield cents. Initially this made sense but after several years I would have thought that more Not So shield cents would be showing up but that has not happened yet. So seems like they don't circulate much was my point.

As far as I am concerned these shield cents are just another 'penny' in a jar.

PS - No I do Not have trash cans full of cents like that one thread shows. Ha.

Ugliest coin reverse ever. Well, at least in the top 5. I use my watch pocket for sh.cts. Then I give them out at every penny drop box at the stores. I had 2 with die cracks on the reverse and never even looked closely at them. Someday we will get an administration that cares about what our coinage looks like, as well as our currency. I would love to go back to the Education Notes style and creativity. But, oh well, it is what it is.

That sounds like a good place for them. Also might be why I keep getting New Shiny shield cents - few people spend them.

Maybe I will give my shield cents away at Christmas to one of the kids.
Will they hate me for that.
