NEWP- Finally ponied up for some OLD gold

For a while now Ive wanted to acquire a draped/bust right gold piece. Originally I had hoped to find a 1799 $10 , but unfortunately the recent sale prices have been beyond my reach for the desired grade and condition.

I came across this 1800 $5 one about a month ago, and after some negotiation with the seller, I felt comfortable pulling the trigger on what I believe to be a special coin. After what seemed like an eternity, I got the coin in hand today.

In my opinion it has a very solid strike, with a little softness in the shield and obverse lettering (to be expected with the series). The color is consistent throughout the fields and the peripheral areas near the rim, and the coin exhibits quite a bit of luster underneath its skin. It doesn’t have any detracting blemishes in the focal areas, and a few wispy hairlines that can only be seen at certain angles don’t bother me the slightest. Also, the holder has horizontal scratches across the obverse portrait.

Compared to other examples I’ve seen, I think this coin is quite unmolested, and I cant identify any signs of processing. The dirt in the devices, while not particularly attractive, I understand is another indicator of originality. Unlike some of my other unmemorable purchases, I can say that I truly love this coin, and I don’t think I’ll be parting with it any time soon. The photos I took do this coin no justice, perhaps I could have some good shots taken at the upcoming FUN show, but at least it has a TV. Enjoy!
