Please pass judgement on this 1972 S Lincoln from a roll today...

Just dove into one of the rolls I picked up from a buddy at the most recent Denver Coin Expo.
He bought these as a child and they've basically been in a box since around 1977 and he's never searched them...not his thing.

He told me he opened a couple of them when he was younger to look at the first few coins but that's all he can remember.

Before you judge my find...take a quick look at some MS67s by our host, there are only 28 of them EDITED TO FIX LINK https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1972-s-1c-rd/2959

The PCGS population report says 28 MS67s and zero MS68s.
I notice there are also 3 MS67+ images so maybe the report isn't updated?

Today's roll and the winner...took extra shots in full sun too trying to bring out the details.
LOVE these searches  zen time...

I’m at 63/64 - it looks like an average or slightly better UNC to me. The link to the 67 shows a coin where it takes a couple seconds to find the flaws.

I'm not a huge fan of the 67s linked (especially the first one), but those coins are blazers with no immediately noticeable marks (ie, none in the prime focal area). I noticed multiple marks on your coin before anything else, and then found some more marks after that.

64 maybe 65 on the right day, great album coin but I would not submit that one.

I went back and forth between 63 and 64 without reading any context. I decided not to land on a final number.

Too many hits and not enough luster for a 67.
Hits in field above date, shoulder and arm, above and below ear, all over the rim, hits all over the steps on the reverse, lots of spotting around E P UNUM and ONE CENT.

No shot at 67. Maybe could go 66.
I’d probably grade it a 65+ from those photos.
I’m not a copper guy and pay little to no attention to Lincoln cents so I really don’t know how to grade them, but definitely not a 67.

Scratches above the date kills it for me.

The reason the images are not matching the population numbers is because the image page link is for a D mint with a population of 67 = 29 and 67+ = 5.

Edit: I see you edited the OP to change the D mint link to S mint. But you forgot to edit out the part about the images showing three 67+. Which it does not now that you changed it to S mint.

If you’ve ever searched rolls of 70 era Lincoln’s, you’d know this is a nice find. Great example but not sure it would earn a 67.

Does that mean you think it has a chance? If so, why?

I just did another one of these tubes acquired from the same friend of mine. I'm going to post the results of that one too, it was a roll of 1973 Ds. They were a nightmare of die polishing that literally looks like whizzing on many of them, carbon spots, and plating issues...and the entire roll was RPM-003.

How would you have plating issues on 1973's?

The coin appears to have subdued luster, as well as multiple marks and carbon flecks/spots on each side. MS67 isn’t a grade I’d even consider for it.

If there was one person I was hoping would respond
Honest, Thank you taking a look!

When I do my final sorting, I sometimes make notes on flips when I want second opinions.
So, full disclosure and to be honest with the group...here's my uncropped flip.
My guess was a 66...until I took a really close look at our host's 67s...and then I decided I wanted feedback on this coin.

Look at what the date, shoulder, and ears look like on the PCGS 67s...
I'm thinking mine seems better in some ways, no?

Anyway...Here's my proof I'm being honest with the group, the uncropped flip.
My brain said 66 and my hand tried to write 65 and I had to stop and regroup for a moment lol.
Thank you so much for the insights everyone!!!...I asked for judgment, I got it!
    I do think it would get a 66 :)

Was editing it and had the post vaporize..having that issue sometimes again. Remembered to copy it before editing it though...reposted.

Those lofty grades - 67, 67+ and 68, are hard to come by for a reason....well, a lot of reasons called hits, rubs, dings, wear, etc.. Always fun to search and hope though. Cheers, RickO
