I see you posted a second one at the same clock time I posted. I was referring to the first one, as it look like corrosion.

Yes, both aren't best, but the second one being much better. Around EF-45 compared to VF. If coins could talk, the second one would have a story to tell!

The problem with these coins is that they've suffered environmental damage and are considered PMD

Huh, I thought the second one was just toning, but again I did't think they were good, just cool.

Green on copper is Verdigris - treat to stop it before storing the coin.

The dark green or the milky green? The second one has been in that holder for about 15 years.

I would guess any green patch appering on your copper coins. Remember large cents are 100% copper so more suseptible to Verdi.

Uh oh, I think you might be right. It also has a bit of reddish color and a couple big scratches on the obverse. To bad, it was one of my nicer ones. It even has some luster left. :(

both coins exhibit signs of verdigris.

I am a newer collector (started April 2020), and I primarily focus on U.S. Half Cents and Type Coins. Early copper is my favorite.

Yes, sadly the second one too, although not bad. I find the first one to be quite unique though.

I would soak it in mineral oil for a week (or so), and then see if you can remove the verdigris with a toothpick or maybe a thorn. The mineral soak will soften the verdigris to help you remove it. If it doesn't look better after a week - give it another week in the hole.

    Good luck.

The pictures are very blurry... The verdigris should be removed, but be aware, there could be surface damage exposed once you remove it. Removing it is the right thing to do though, or it will just continue to get worse. Cheers, RickO

I don’t care about the first one, but the second is special to me. What do you think is best way to remove it? Thank you!

@Ownerofawheatiehorde .... You can try soaking it in mineral oil for ten or fifteen days and with a toothpick or rose thorn it may come off.... Or get an expert to try Verdicare.... Cheers, RickO
