My first EBay purchase. Did I do okay? Feedback Please Jefferson collectors

Hi everyone. I am fairly new to this forum. Decided to get my feet wet and try EBay, which I did today in their auction format. These 2 coins seemed pretty nice to me, and the older 2002 holders is a big plus for me. My cost is $40 all in.
How do you think I made out. Please post your honest opinion positive or negative. Thanks so much. Sellers photos posted. Do any of the coins have a chance for 5 or 6 step designation? I have no clue about steps on Jefferson’s.

I don't know what the current values of the coins are but I imagine they sell often enough that you could check past sales on eBay to get an idea. I don't think there's any chance of getting any useful input regarding step designation from the pictures shown.

I think you did just fine. No steps that I can see. But, it might be the pics.

$40 seems alright for these coins. I will default to PCGS's in hand opinion on the steps and say that they aren't FS.

I think the price is maybe a little high, but if you like them it's fair.

My very honest opinion is that I think you overpayed, not because that is not what these sell for on ebay but because I think you could have bought them for less at a show or in a coin shop. There are deals on ebay but usually you are paying full retail pricing on the vast majority of items. However, having said that your downside is very limited at $40 all in.

No way for anyone to have any meaningful comment on the steps from the photos, but I would expect that PCGS would have noted it on the label if these had good steps.

Wow, that's not my experience at all, unless you're talking about buying from dealers. If that were my experience I wouldn't buy very much on eBay.

That said, one does have to be reasonably careful.

I really like the older, solid gasket holders, so that is a plus! I think you did alright!

I think you did just fine. All but the FS Jeffs are running a little low right now, but they may do ok. I do not think you lost any money.

I am not much of a slabbed modern collector, but if you want them, you did great. Two already slabbed MS65 semi-key dates for $40 seems like a good buy to me.

While the pictures are hard to discern how nice they are as 65's, I doubt anyone missed Full Steps. At $20. each, all in, seems fair or good, last I checked. Most pre-War nickels seem to be at about that, minimum, for nice PCGS65's.

I was thinking maybe the one that appears to have colorful toning, the 38D might bring a high price in a GC auction

Looks like you did alright....No bargain, but certainly not overpriced. No FS, or it would have been on the label. Cheers, RickO

So your buying on eBay and already thinking about GC. Congratulations and I sincerely wish you good luck. That’s a mighty big step for someone who is kinda new. ( not knowing about steps was a clue). Be careful and I would spend many many hours researching eBay sold prices and learning about varieties. Perhaps a Redbook would be helpful.
Again, good luck and enjoy the hunt. Collect what you like and generally you will be content. 😁

if you want PLASTIC you did good.....
would cost you way more than $20 each if you sent them in to get plasticized.

I understand your point. I did research past GC auctions and have learned 1938 D and S sell for $30-35 in MS 65, while nice toned examples go for a few hundred. Not the main reason I bought the coins, liked the older holders, actually my favorite the PCGS 2000-2003 and the coins of course. Also happy JA stated to me that he will soon sticker Jefferson’s

You saved a lot of money. That's what my wife tells me, every time she buys somethin' on sale.

Jefferson nickels were the first series I collected. It's a fun series where many of the coins are very affordable. I've since sold a lot of my graded nickels and moved on to other series. Still have a dansco of raw Jeff's I'm filling up.

You might check out "the Jefferson nickel analyst" as some reading to guide you. As to the coins you bought I see no obvious issues with them from your pictures. They look like nice examples and I'm glad you're happy with them. I think Jefferson nickel are a fun series to collect. Good luck.

You did fine if you want a gem in plastic. The steps from 1938 are the 'wavy' type and are difficult to determine even if you have the coin in hand.

Someone else can correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is they were showing FS Jefferson's in the early 2000's. It seems I have a few 66FS from that generation of holder/label, but I'd have to look at the holder to be sure.

At least before 1998 in the OGH.
