Do I have a shot for a ms 68?
Hi guys,
Hunted this stunner down in my recent bank box of nickels.
Do you guys think it can reach top pop?
Thank you.

Sorry, no
if you are asking about split-grading for such a lofty grade on such a coin from images from a digi-scope, let me be the one to tell you, it ain't gonna happen my man. at best it will be a lottery ticket/crap shoot advice.
No.
Probably another example of heirs quickly dumping coins found in an estate. Unusual find.
No. Too much going on with Jeff's jaw and around the corner with the building. Lucky to get a 63/64 .
Agree. Lucky to get a 60 with the scuff in the shoulder.
I would say no, there are several marks on his jawline.

No, but a great candidate for some MS70. I think all the mess on the shoulders will be gone.
Here's an example of a MS68 perhaps MS69. Only marks are a tiny tick by mouth and left window and light abrasion by MM. Started out in a PCGS 67 than 67+ until a year or so later I saw it in a Heritage auction catalog graded by NGC MS68 6 step holder. Whenever one becomes hardpressed finding anything wrong with a coin, not even one mulsicule of a nick or speck and it must be fully struck piece. Only than one might be able to think into the MS68 realm of grading.

IMO, the strike isn't strong enough in addition to what the others have said.
Why would you think the coin might have a chance at such a high grade? How many facial marks do you see? It looks like double digits to me.

No as it's too much work to change the last two 43 digits to 68
Ok, thanks guys!

Looks very out of the ordinary in hand.

A shine and Luster, beyond most!

The general rule of thumb for sending a coin to grade at or near top pop in the 67/68 range is that you shouldn't be able to find any nicks or hits anywhere, which should give you a shot in the grading room.

Well, I guess if graders only graded from images...maybe?
No way, not even close.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.i've bought many coins that i would describe like this and w/o louping, would be lock 67/68 BUT then a good louping and my hopes are dashed!
i will give ya a tip. learn to differentiate between contact and crud that fills the dies in common places from series to series as there are some coins out there in lofty-grade holders with these types of "marks." - this will be crucial when going to some top pops, especially pre-64.
AU Details if you're lucky.
No
Nevertheless, a great looking coin to be found roll searching!
"When they can't find anything wrong with you, they create it!"
It is. It really is. But if you were to take the top 10 1943-P that aren't in collections, you'd be hard pressed to have a coin over MS 63. It's a GREAT circulation find, but just not worth submitting.
Details? Why?

Looks polished in pics.
Was this a serious question?
Really?

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line. You never know, until you submit it that is. I was just looking at a so-called ms68 1938d buff which was slabbed by
ngc and to me it was no better than a ms67, and even that a bit of a stretch. Bet the submitter was stunned when
he got this coin back from ngc.

@joeykoins.... Sometimes a coin will jump out of a group of like coins, seeming to have exceptional qualities. This is such a coin. However, upon close scrutiny, it will be found to be lacking due to minor hits/dings/scratches. They may be tiny, but they hurt. Cheers, RickO
Joey, sometimes you just find a neat coin. Years ago, I got a Wheatie that was full RD in change. I thought, "that's neat, probably a 58 D." I flipped it over and it was a 53 S. Coin would probably grade MS 65 RD; not worth enough to slab, but a neat find, nevertheless. I think that's the case with your nickel.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
that is why i discourage digi-scope full pics of coins. those lights do some crazy things.
@JoeyCoins
are you really going to let us hold you back and NOT send this sucker off? imagine the glory and gloating when you get it back in a 68+ holder!!!!
after all the stuff you sent out, surely you can average this cost out if it misses knowing you'll have some other coins that hit?
No.
Thanks for the encouragement.

We'll see?

Here's a 1938 business strike that I think would grade MS68. Looking at Jefferson nickels for 31 years, I believe one needs to see quite a few coins, like 10,000 before a MS68 calibur coin comes along. I've had better luck for dates 1987 to 2003. Before that 6-7 coins. Such coins need to be near perfection, for example; the 1997 SMS. But that one grades MS69. So.....look for that example that grades between MS67 and MS69. lol

And here's another but a much later date.
I think this 1952-D may make it.
