Grade this 1937d three legged buffalo nickel -- straight grade or details?

Grade this 1937d three legged buffalo. I think it should be in a details capsule but your thoughts?

Probably details grade for Environmental damage, but I still like it.
VF Details
Looks like so-callled 'environmental damage'. No straight grade.
I might be in the minority here but I think a straight grade for that coin would be fine.
Coin Photographer.
I’m in the same minority.😉

Toning looks off to me…I don’t think it will pass mustard.

My guess is that the toning is the result of a cleaning. But if so, I don’t think it would be significant enough to result in a details grade.

Ditto. I don't see any "damage" just normal "toning".
If the toning is the issue, maybe a soak in acetone, will remove the tone. Which then, may remove the "straight grade" question?

Acetone will sometimes remove the tone.
Good luck.
Great coin, regardless.

Very nice. I like the dark patina and that splash of vibrant color is awesome.
As others have stated, probably environmental damage, but it still looks pretty good to me.
I’d probably prefer it slabbed even if it’s details just because of the value of the coin.
I like it and would straight grade it but PCGS has been on a real mean streak when it comes to black on coins.

Market acceptable to fine 15
Here is the ANACS slab within which the coin reposes
IMHO this coin should definitely be in a details graded holder and not a
straight grade holder as it is here and cleaning up or attempting to undo
the environmental damage would be futile

Straight grade. That looks like acceptable toning for a circulated buffalo nickel. I've seen several buffalos that looked like this coin in straight graded slabs.

What I meant to say is if I found this one in a junk box I would definitely keep it! There was a day in the past when I went to
a local dealers coin shop and cherry picked one of these in very good for a quarter! And in the same junk box was a
1935 doubled die reverse! You just never know whats around the corner. Earlier this year I got a 1915 doubled die
obverse in good. A very rare variety. But back to this coin, it is still a nice coin and the encrustation is uniform and does
not really look that offensive.

I believe it should be straight graded, not details. Old coin, seen commerce, and looks good. Cheers, RickO
Maybe the grading services should just describe this type of environment modification as "crusty" and give it
a straight grade? Some collectors pay big bucks for monster toning so maybe some would pay extra for these
"crusty" specimens!

If you look at the reverse the encrustation looks as it it has eaten into the surfaces of the coin making this coin a
details grade coin most of the time.

Perhaps a bit overgraded, but I like it and think the asking price is reasonable.

I think it is even a bit better than a VF20

Even if it is a details coin it will still be very marketable. Many collectors will find it attractive just as it is. I like it and think it would make a great album coin.
Acetone won't ever remove toning
leave it as is. I like the obverse toning. The reverse....not so much!

Genuine.
I think there's a difference between "not pretty" and "damaged." I'm no expert, but I certainly have (and have seen other) straight-graded coins with significant "toning" (for lack of a more pejorative word) like this.
So I don't see why this would have to get a "details" grade, but I do think it's a classic example of "buy the coin, not the holder."
I'm certainly no expert compared to some who have responded it would grade, but I do not think it warrants or would receive a grade other than details.

I'm 100% details.
I've had numerous coins with colors, then when I would soak them in the acetone. To remove some dark debris, for some strange reason, the colors would just disappear?

This occurred quite a few times.
Probably not a true tone but some environmental splotchs? That the tone would be removed?

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I graded it VF20 from the images certainly not details. Glad to see I agreed with ANACS. I've seen similar toning on pre-civil war silver in VF that was straight graded, so..............
So, is my understanding, that this ANACS

that your showing is the same OP coin?
If so, GREAT! It made a straight grade. Even though, it's ANACS. Not PCGS or NGC.
Beautiful Buffalo 3-legged, dude.

I like the coin and would not mess with it, regardless of any TPG grade. IMO it should straight grade at PCGS.
I saw this initially on my phone and now I am looking at it on a laptop. I have concerns as to a straight grade. I would pass based on what I am seeing at the moment. This variety is really not that difficult to find- I would seek out a different example

I DO NOT OWN THIS COIN.
P.S. ANY ATTEMPT TO "IMPROVE" THIS COIN IMO WOULD BE FUTILE! WOULD ONLY MAKE ITLOOK WORSE.
