Was this Buffalo Nickel Misgraded by NGC Or Did Someone Get A Deal?

This coin sold for $34.52 on Great Collections tonight. Is that a large scratch on the obverse Indian or did someone score a deal. Normally a decent coin sells for about $90 or more. What do you guys think?

The photos make it look like an overgraded coin. The bidding apparently reflects that.
The grader must’ve loved the luster and ignored the marks. I see that quite a bit, but this is an extreme case, imo.
I weight marks more heavily, but this puts me at odds with the tpg’s.
There have been multiple PCGS and NGC examples that have sold for $50-$60 on eBay in the last few months. So while this was lower than that, it wasn’t that much lower.
Generic coins can slip by in auctions and that appears to have happened here.
Something like that could easily be missed in 7 seconds.

OP coin could be a swap. Hard for me to believe that NGC would be so far off. That's no more than a $3 or $4 coin we're seeing in the OP.

I guess I'll be in the minority and state that I see nothing wrong with the coin, with the grade or with the final price. I believe the mark you have circled is a scuff on the NGC plastic as these often show up as white or gray marks in photography and the coin likely falls within the definition of an MS65. Also, the final bid was $34.52, but after the GC BP ($5) and GC shipping fee ($5.50) the coin actually cost the buyer just over $45. This is more than what an NGC MS64 would set one back and is only a small amount below what an NGC MS65 for the date can typically be had for. The coin may very well have simply fallen through the cracks as an NGC certified coin from a common date in a common grade.

I agree, on all counts. It looks like it's on the plastic to me. And it's a widget which sold within the right price range.
MS65 coins have marks on them. Thats why they aren't MS 70. Coin looks fine and the price wasn't too low.

Agree that scratch is on the slab. Looks like someone got a good deal on a nice coin.

Ya, looks like scratch is on the slab to me also. Decent coin at a decent price.

@TomB put it very well, and I agree. Seems like a fair buy. Cheers, RickO
The coin has one of the most boldly struck top feathers I've seen. and has nice luster. That probably put the coin over the top for a 65 even if it has a lot more "dings and dangs" then I like for a coin at that grade.
It'll look nice in an uncirculated set.

The line circled actually looks raised as if there were a scratch in the die itself.
The NGC cert slab photo appears to show that line but a little harder to see (I enlarged it a little on screen and is there). Makes me think it is more likely on the coin but still could have been an early holder scratch.

Photos are hard to buy from, so I consider the low hammer price to be like a "potluck" type bid.
All told it is a very common date for the series and there are MANY 65’s to choose from. To me this coin looks like a plain Jane that would not bring better money for the date in the grade of 65. As far as that line in question goes, I have no idea from the pics. I agree with @TomB that it (appears) to be on the slab, not the coin. It’s a tough call from those horrible pics.
Many common issues seemed to sell lower last night. Whether it was less bidders from the SE or cost of living increases lowering coin expenditures is too early to tell.
