I gotcha jedm, now I understand the verb tense (was me who asked that one!) OAKSTAR, completely agree, for me whether to crackout or not depends on the grade, and the nature of the holder itself. Like if I had a '16-D (had a "iffy" example years ago and sold it, so right there glad I left it in the PCGS slab to ensure authenticity) -- eventually I'll get one again -- I'd be more likely to crack it out if it were a G example, vs. a fine. But not if it were an OGH. But if it was an OGH with a lot of chips in the edges, then maybe.

OAKSTAR, an 1885 nickel that has the detail and original surfaces of yours is a very tough bird.
Yes, it took me a while to save and find the one I liked. It's a VF-20. She was broken out, then locked back up in that Whitman! 😉
It's super-nice, and looks great! Whether to crack out the keys and fill that hole with a nice example is something I go back and forth on. If you're going to keep the coin/set indefinitely "forever" then great! If there's the possibility I might want to sell it, to maximize value it's likely I'd have to get it slabbed again -- so then the cost/time/risk of loss/damage while doing so... and for some slabs, such as my 1877 cent, it's a really nice XF in a damage-free OGH, so I'd really rather leave it right where it is. A number of my other Indians are also in slabs, while some are nice raws. To the point where I'd almost consider making a lower grade G-VG set for an album, and complete the slabbed look in VF or better for the same set -- decisions, decisions. Any way a person decides is best for how they collect is the correct one.
I went through the same. Started collecting Morgans and started a slabbed set of the best I bot, and an album with lower grades. Both were almost complete. But trimmed back recently to having just the Dansco Morgans with a couple of slabs that were dupes. Sold about 100 of my slabs since they were easy to sell and get market value. But I've cracked coins in the $1,000 range with no hesitation. I would not crack a $10K coin though, at least with my financials, lol. I have not and would never crack a Morgan GSA also as the holder adds value and they have their own market niche.
As someone told me early on when I started collecting, never crack an over-graded coin or lower end of the grade or one with potential issues. If a coin is under-graded or 'A' quality, crack it. I have never bot any CAC coins so that is a different story and would never crack for an album.
Luckily I started collecting 20 years ago and most of my set was bot 15 years ago so I'm basically ahead 25%, more for the keys, and don't care if selling raw loses me 10-15% of current prices. The enjoyment in the album more than makes up for that. Its not for the profit that I started collecting.
Old photos and much of this set has been upgraded since I took them.
Includes the 1916 DDO (last coin in second row) 1918/17D (first in row 4), and the 1930 5-leg, 1935 DDR, 1937-D 3-leg an 1938 D/D/D/S, (all reversed in second holder.) Someday I'll get around to taking photos that include the upgrades.
Proud recipient of the coveted "You Suck Award" (9/3/10).
Absolutely stunning! Love the colors. Great work of art.
Thank you! It’s taken years to put together. I haven’t looked for upgrades as much lately, but still have people reach out to me every now and then when they find a toner.
OnWithTheHunt, LOVE the Buffalos display. Is there any story of discovery behind your 1916 DD or the 1918/7-D, or you bought them for what they were, or?
WOW! Beautiful !!
Probably the most challenging way to store coins. Everytime you have to change a coin you have to take the holder apart and pray that none fall out and dissapear or get damaged. Big plastics are not for me, but I certainly can enjoy someone else's effort.

Love this - I have thought many times about trying this set, since the dimes and quarters have too many "stoppers" to make a full album set practical.

Thanks. The only "discovery" was the 5-legger, a cherrypick. Got the 16/16 at a B&M, it has some rim damage but was better than the dateless one I'd previously found in a batch of junk Buffs. The overdate came off ebay as a SEGS VF-20 or 25. The 35DDR in my current set, (not the one shown) was also a cherrypick from a shop for $9. It originally graded UNC details by ANACS because of some minor obverse scratches .

Been meaning to take photos of these albums for some time now. The album is a Gardmaster from Canada, it resembles the old Harco albums with the PVC inserts but the slides in this album are archival quality. Some of these coins have been in this album for 25+ years. Also the three extra coins on the last page are a duplicate 1909, a 1909-S/horizontal S, and a 1936 DDO#1.

Can i ask, Seanq, how long did it take to put that set together?
I've been working on that set for 30 years. I completed the wheat cent album maybe five years ago, though I still upgrade when the opportunity arises.

I keep my one-a-year collection in a Dansco now, but was rearranging so was able to stage photos in the classic folder. The 1945 is slightly corroded - I found it in our yard as a kid, so have not upgraded it.
My completed (to me) Type 1 San Francisco Mint circulated double eagle set. The well circulated pieces call to me more than the AU and low MS examples with these jumbo gold coins. After the XF range they don't seem to become attractive again until the Gem level. Plus, while I can appreciate the beauty of a Gem, I like the idea of a coin that actually served it's intended purpose for a while. There's no T1 66S but that just aint gonna happen so we're calling this one complete lol.
My collecting passion started with Morgans. One Sunday I was at the monthly coin show in Holmdel NJ and couldn't find anything I was looking for to fit my set. Like most folks, had to buy something. A dealer by the door had some Peace dollars. Silver was under $4 and the common Peace dates were given no love. Bot the 22P, a commercial UNC for $6. I started to see some of the other common dates on EBAY at cheap prices and started buying them. Next thing I knew, I was hooked and had to complete the set. Very glad I bot that first dollar - its in the album.

Complete set of Liberty Seated dimes minus the unique 1873-cc. Not all are in PCGS holders, but the better dates generally are:

I wasn't really interested in the clad coins. I was looking for a 46 to 64 Dansco at the time but could only find this one, so I filled it.
