What is Your Opinion of this LOW GRADE 1822 Bust Dime?

I Would be interested to hear what the experts think of this bust dime.
This is the first example I bought for my collection sometime in the late 80's, and which I later upgraded.
Although low grade I was really happy to have it. It was the first I had seen that I could afford.
Thanks!

When you bought it it was an AG.
Today?
Possibly a G-04
BHNC #203
My grade is Good-4. When you get to this level, I don’t get hyper sensitive to cleaning unless it’s blatant. This coin has been cleaned. So if you go to get it graded, you will probably see that on the holder. To me it’s a decent album coin.
It does appear to be cleaned. Some scratches and nicks which are somewhat consistent at this grade level. Nearly full rims on both sides except for a small portion on the reverse. I think it has G-6 details but wouldn't straight grade. still a decent coin for an 1822.
I'd like to see a pic of the upgrade if you have that available.
A nice album coin... Looks like a G4 but details due to cleaning. Cheers, RickO
i don't think i am the expert on this one but i have to go with vg8 details and depending on having a better image to accurately show the surfaces, if the planets aligned and the sun was shining, given what i've seen graded on key early dates, i personally would have to try at least once sending it off. nice coin.

Don't be fooled by the "LIBERTY." That feature is deeply into the design. The coin would have to be worn down to Poor-1 before you would start thinking about it disappearing. That coin is not close to VG.
I like it as a G4 album coin. As others have already said, it's been cleaned but that doesn't bother me so much at this grade... especially for Capped Bust coinage that saw heavy use.

i appreciate the observation but for this coin liberty wasn't a consideration. i felt it was like g6 when i first looked at it but then, feeling a bit rusty, pulled up photograde and aside from the rim weakness, matches the vg8 example. for sure not a 10 but has more meat than a 6 from their images but with the issues, even if straight-graded, highly unlikely to get that on a holder.

Thank you, all, for your comments. Very interesting and I really learn much from them.
Many have remarked this dime appears to be cleaned. I have to admit I'm not good enough at recognising a cleaning, except when really obvious. However, I get the feeling my photos make my coins look worse than they are in hand.
I guess I will know when I finally have my collection graded. And that is no easy for me. PCGS-Europe is located in Paris and there is no way I will send my coins in the mail. I would probably have to bring them personally and I really dislike driving in Paris - It is a nightmare. It is also quite a drive from here. I will probably make this a project for next year.
Here are photos of my upgrade 1822 dime. The coin is actually a bit darker in hand.
G4, possibly burnished. Still, a coin that would look good in a budget collection and one that would probably be easy to sell. Dimes of this type are just not that common.
I’ve got a similar coin and story on an 1828 quarter.
At the time, it was probably the most I had spent on a single coin ($22 when I was 14ish). Won it at an auction I convinced my dad to drive me to and have always been super proud of it.
I like your dime and think it’s got some pretty good details for its age.
1822 dime is a very tough coin. It would almost certainly market grade at least G4 and would sell for around $3000 I bet. I have had a good amount of experience with that coin. They are hard as hell to find and especially hard to find problem free.
My Early Large Cents
I like the coin! No doubt a details grade, but still nice in my books.

I would grade the second 1822 Dime as a FIne -12. It's a very nice piece.
No there is doubt. Coins like this often get market acceptable grades.

I like the coin and the cleaning is not that onerous. In fact a little bit of thumbing after using a toothpick at the encrustations and it might go G4. If the toothpick won't get it a soak in olive oil probably would.
It's such a tough date it would still be nice even with a bad cleaning. The reverse marking bothers me more than the cleaning.
I was looking at the scratch marks on the reverse for the reason behind a details grade. Without those, I think it would have a much better chance at a straight grade.

G-04. It’s a nice coin to fill the hole.
I should have checked my Red Book before calling that a coin for a budget collection. It only shows how out of touch with that series I am. Even in G4 that is one expensive coin!
Far be it from me to disagree with a former dealer and someone who's been collecting for longer than I've been alive, but I think that's a bit conservative. Has the overall look of a VF-20 to me.
There is no secure way to ship your coins in France comparable to Registered Mail in the US?
I share your interest for the 1822 dime. When I started collecting Capped Bust Dimes in the 80's this is one coin which I actively sought. I remember that 1822's in VG were selling for about $300 back then.
Connecticoin, I actually live in Germany so that makes things a little more complicated. I am sure there are ways to ship valuable items across EU borders in a secure way, but I am still reluctant to do that. I will need to explore this issue further, and if needed I will have to drive to Paris.
I like it, an 1822 is one of the few bust dimes that I do not have.
I can only imagine your grading all in cost for your extensive collection!
