1971 Proof Jefferson nickel

Just sharing a picture with you guys. My dad started buying me proof sets when I was born way back in 19 and 63. Of all the sets this particular nickel has always stood out to me. I think it would be considered a deep cameo but, I’m fairly new to this so what I think doesn’t really matter much LOL.

It looks like it has great contrast. I'm certain these sets have great sentimental value to you, too.

Yes, I would call that a Deep Cameo. The great part is that it’s a Deep Cameo before it became the norm for modern Proof coins.

I agree that the obverse looks deep cameo based on the photo. 1971 is known for one sided cameos so what does the reverse look like?

I can't tell you how many times I have seen dcam obverses only to be disappointed when I flip it over to find a brilliant reverse. Seems to be more prevalent on nickels and halves.

That is a very nice nickel... and appears to be a DCAM. Cheers, RickO

  • You called it! Reverse is as shiny as can be. Are most of the one sided cameos on the obverse?

Yes, in my experience most are one sided cams on the obverse. However, that could be skewed because I usually look at the obverse first and if it isn't cameo, I don't even look at the reverse. It would not surprise me if one sided cameo reverses are out there.

Check them for doubled dies as well, there were quite a few that year albeit mostly minor.
