Terms for different types of toning?

WilliamFWilliamF Posts: 831 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looking to learn here, ive heard/seen different terms for coins with different types of toning, such as bullseye toning, terminal and others...
Is there someone here who can tell me the different types and how to differentiate? Or point me to a resource? I just recently got this PCGS PR65 Washington and I'm trying to figure out what this toning is called, I took pictures of this coin in direct sunlight, they have not been edited/juiced at all, this coin is stunningly vibrant in hand and I probably paid too much for it but I love it

@WilliamF... @MFeld has provided a great list of terms used here on the forum and in the coin world. I just call it all tarnish. ;) Cheers, RickO

Agree great list. I think another term used for textile toning would be mint bag toning, having that checkered or waffle look.

    Thanks.

Textile toning can be a subset of (bank) bag toning, but not all bag toning is textile toning or vice versa. Thanks for the reminder - I have added (bank) bag toning to my list.

    It can be simple.

If you are a seller use the following-rainbow, monster, moose or electric.

If you are a buyer of the same coin use the following-terminal, tarnish, splotchy or rust.

I've also heard of 'tape toning,' and there are specific toning patterns made by some older TPG holders like ANACS and PCI.
