PCGS coin conservation vs crossover?

Herb_THerb_T Posts: 1,754 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a coin that i want to crossover but might benefit from conservation. I think i recall coins that were conserved by PCGS that after the fact they gave a details grade for cleaning. Is it better to crossover and later come back for conservation?

I want to avoid a major disappointment…. Looking for experiences in this area….

Show a photo of the coin. Your question is too broad to elicit useful answers.

If the details grade is were to get assigned after conservation, why would the order matter?

As 291 mentioned it is a little difficult to determine. But I can point you to a couple thing in the pcgs conservation page that might help with this.

First as you probably know pcgs may or may not restore the coin depending on their evaluation.

"Coins graded by other third-party grading services may be submitted, only if you authorize PCGS to remove the coin(s) from their holder following the initial evaluation of the coin(s). Coins removed from other third-party holders do not qualify for a grade guarantee. You indemnify PCGS from any damage that may be done to the coin(s) during this process. You also acknowledge that some coins may have problems that are not apparent until removed from their holder."

But if the coin is in a pcgs holder and sent for conservation.

"Submitting a coin for PCGS Restoration in no way guarantees the upgrade of your coin. If the coin is already in a PCGS holder, it is guaranteed not to downgrade, nothing more. Through our restoration service, PCGS is committed to preserving and restoring coins to their original and natural condition."

This really answers my question. Thank you!

I am doing a restoration now that was recommended by PCGS on one of my more expensive coins that I sent in for reconsideration, that did not upgrade. MAYBE due to some surface contamination.

It might still grade the same, but it will be in a secure chip holder and have a True View, so I consider it a great value with minimal risk on precious metals.

I have several more similar gold and platinum coins in line, if I like the result.

I would go for crossover FIRST. If it crosses over, then you have the PCGS guarantee if you decide to go for restoration. If you go for restoration first (and the coin is not in a PCGS holder), you may have a major, expensive, disappointment.

PCGS has been recommending restoration for a large number of gold coins (specially coins in older holders: rattlers and OGH). I had a couple of gold coins in OGH holders that looked gorgeous with beautiful deep orange toning. The coins were submitted for Reconsideration, did not upgrade, and PCGS recommended restoration. The coins were resubmitted again for Reconsideration, and this time PCGS did NOT recommend restoration !!

I am wondering, if such coins were submitted for Regrade, what would PCGS do ?

I agree with this. Make sure PCGS is OK with the coin first at the grade you feel is OK before cracking out for restoration.

How about selling the coin you apparently are not happy with...avoid the stress of any crossover nonsense and just buying the coin you like?

I have several coins that I am doing various versions of submissions, that I still feel are a grade, or at least a plus, higher. I had very poor results in reconsideration first try.

I sent several of those in for regrade to see. I sent some others in for restoration to see. I will figure out what I missed on a few others, and learn to look closer before submitting.

I will be evaluating all of this, but it takes months even at express which I have to do for value. At some point I will try to be objective and will probably post the results.

So, if I understand you correctly, you got better upgrade results on second or third try Reconsideration for the same coin ?

I would strongly suggest you do the restoration. Every time I’ve ever had either NGC or pcgs recommend it, the coins have always upgraded. Why would you even consider doing a regrade? Pcgs already told you to do the restoration to increase the grade.

I have read many accounts of restoration and regrade efforts here over the years. Some were good, some not so good. I would just buy the coin I liked and avoid the expense and time involved. Cheers, RickO

I think gold coins in OGHs with beautiful deep orange toning should be left alone, or sent to CAC. There are already too many dipped coins with max’d out grades in modern holders.

Because it is not currently in a PCGS holder. Certainly possible they crack it out of existing holder and then it comes back details, whether restored or not. If he crosses it over first he gets the minimum grade guarantee from PCGS and no chance of a downgrade.

Also, @Herb_T , can we get that pic? :)

The OP coin is in some other holder. abdelmeg1’s coin is in a pcgs holder, and that is who I was responding to. I think the OP should conserve/restore the coin with the current grading company, then crossover.

@Walkerguy21D I totally agree with you. But I am just wondering why PCGS is recommending Restoration for most these Beautifully toned, undergraded (in my opinion) coins ??? Business decision ? PCGS charges 3% of the value of the coin for Restoration !

@1madman , Just curious, how many coins did you submit for Restoration ? and they ALL upgraded ? What was the reason for restoration ?
