@MFeld so if you take the median value of that list, 63. The average however would be 57.08. Excluding Unc details.

If so, I believe that’s way too low. I could be wrong, but to my eyes, the coin doesn’t even hint at an AU grade.

I look forward to the big reveal.😉

And based on the huge range of grade guesses, I guess my earlier question in this thread has been answered.😉
“Why is it any more challenging than most other Indian $2.50 and $5 GTG threads?”

I'm going with 57 gold CAC, now what?

Now, what? Now I can state unequivocally, that your guess was incorrect.😄

No. The average value is not 57.08 if we exclude the MS details coin.

If you simply add up the grades of the 32-guesses listed by @MFeld (excluding the MS details guess) and take the average you end up with 61.07. However, that would be an incorrect figure and would be skewed too low since all the MS grades go in one-point increments (save for the + guesses) while the AU grades move in increments of 2 (60 to 58), 3 (58 to 55) and 2 (55 to 53). If we recognize this and make all the grades move in one-point increments, relative to the most popular guess of 63, and give the + grades a value of 0.5 (such as an MS63+ guess is really MS63.5) then we get the average to be 61.64.

I am using the following data provided by @MFeld and excluding the MS details guess-

    (1) 53
    (2) 55
    (7) 58
    (1) 58+
    (1) unc. details
    (1) 61
    (3) 62
    (10) 63
    (1) 63+
    (3) 64
    (1) 64+
    (2) 65

@tomb I must have missed a number or two, and I used 0.5 for plusses as you said. So I just fat fingered a number or two in my addition is all :)

Interesting. Pretty coin for a 62. How is the luster?

Had I submitted this one, I'd have gotten a 55, hence my guess :o

This thing is nuts. It says $5 Indian on the link, but the coin in the picture is 1908 $2.50. :o

Whoa! Ok...that's the second mistake I've experienced with grading this year.
    Thanks! Can't believe I didn't notice that...

The MS62 grade is a good one, but indicates too much in chatter or issues impairing eye appeal to keep the coin out of a 63 holder.

You could just as easily say the same about a 61 coin being kept out of a 62 holder, a 63 coin being kept out of a 64 holder, etc. And the eye appeal of the subject coin appears to be quite good.

    i still give it a 65

The grading services would be giving us stellar grades all day long if they could but they have to be strict and honest in all fairness to maintain their good reputations. A guy was trying to sell cc common date Morgan dollars at the flea market on Sunday, they were SGG certified MS66, but they were no better than 63-4. When a service goes into the ludicrous realm of giving away gratutitous and bogus grades they lose all credibility.

    MS62

With all those 64 and higher guesses...oh man it's big price changes at those numbers...resubmit?!
And yes...the obverse is absolutely lovely

I've never personally submitted to CAC nor am I huge CAC supporter but this could be a good one to send in... Based on the collector's love for stickers it may work to your advantage.

    Just thinking...

When I pull an actual TrueView of the coin it appears that it has two significant scratches in front of the eagle's beak. And a lot of small scratches behind the eagle's head. I see similar issues on coins with a TrueView in Coin Facts that are graded 65-66 that also have some issues in their fields. But in hand the two in front of the eagle's beak may be deeper than they appear in a picture? I could not blow up the posted image of this coin.

The obverse also seems to have scratches that do not appear on the posted image.

Here's the max image size...I posted the medium size for some unknown reason when I revealed the grade.
