I Did Something They Say Never to do in the Coin Hobby

FlyingAlFlyingAl Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭✭✭

I purchased a roll of cents off of Ebay. I know many of your minds have already went to that "original roll" scam that gets newer collectors frequently, but I saw this roll not marked as original (it was actually marked as a roll of 1951-D proofs ) and my curiosity got the better of me. I thought I had a good chance and thought I'd at least get enough enjoyment out of the hunt of the roll for my money (well kinda ).

Luckily for me, it turned out and I purchased a seemingly original roll of red 1951-D Lincoln cents for $22 shipped. Big smile here! I don't remember anything like this ever turning out on the forums, if I am wrong please correct me. At least, I don't remember any threads about truly original Wheat cents rolls.

I must apologize for the bad phone pics. I will probably find the best coin and image it at some point. A quick glance reveals the average coin grades around 65RD.

Nice! I've done that before for a similar price/gamble and got a full roll of RD 1956-D Wheats, about half of them would grade over 64 and the others had little marks that would keep them away but I was happy with the purchase :)

I did that once and found a 1953-D full red cent that was 25% off-struck.
I was glad I opened it up.

It's a few years old IPhone SE. I think the phone camera does fine for quick pictures but I still love to use an old Canon Rebel XTi for any photography that is important because the resolution and versatility is off the charts better when compared to a phone camera.

I hope you asked the eBay seller what else the had for sale or maybe thinking about selling.

I've got some of my best coins that way.
    Doesn't cost anything to ask.

I have several of these from 1955 - one day I’ll get to all of them but they are still red, uncirculated

You did good. Scoring an original roll of wheaties in great shape is a beautiful thing. Let us know if you find errors. Peace Roy

Years ago, I bid on, and won, two 'original' rolls of 1943 cents... figured they were probably mildly circulated. Did not open them for several years. Then I opened one about four years ago... WOW!! Lustrous, clean uncirculated cents. Still have the other roll unopened. Sometimes one gets lucky as the OP did. Cheers, RickO

I guess that the seller did not know that Proofs were not minted in Denver, but only saw that they were "Shiney Red" I hate it when people say "Proof Quality Coin" when they are not Proofs and never will be.

Very nice find at a seemingly bargain price. Curious what you plan to do with them? Unless they grade 67 your bargain purchase is no longer a bargain if you start submitting the better ones. Me personally, I can’t differentiate a 65 from a 67 Lincoln.

Very good purchase - I suggest that you go to varietyvista and check them all for DD"s and RPM's. You may have more value than you think.
