ANA Show Report

This was my 52nd consecutive (1970-date) ANA Convention. This year our daughter went with me. I wanted my wife to go also but the rough road that we had to travel on would not be good for her back.
We left home on Sunday at 12:15. After about an hour we ran into a 20-mile detour. We arrived at our hotel in Springfield, Illinois a little before dark.
We had a quick breakfast at Mc Donalds on Monday. We then drove an hour to visit our cousins on their farm. We had a nice visit, and my daughter rode us around the fields and gravel roads in their new Chuckwagon. She was having a blast. Around lunch time we all drove into town and ate at a Mexican restaurant. It was very good. We said goodbye and drove over four hours to the Chicago area. We arrived a little before dark.
On Tuesday after breakfast at the hotel we drove to the convention center. I parked the car in the garage ($15), and we started on the long walk on the sky bridge to the convention. We arrived about noon. We already had our badges, so we did not have to wait in line. We entered the show at the 12:30 opening time.
I went to the PCGS booth and had my daughter stand in line, but there was no line. I told her to get in line if one started. I went to see David Kahn. I asked him his opinion on a reconsideration of a PCGS old green holder Chain Cent in 15 that I had brought along. He said the reverse would go a 20 but the obverse was a maybe. He said that they are so tight now that he would not try it but would instead send it in to CAC. He took it to submit it to CAC. I went to the PCGS booth to retrieve my daughter and then went back see David. I sold him three coins. We next went to see Liz Coggan. I thought that she might have something that I needed but she did not.
We then started around the bourse floor in the black carpet area (the high rent district). I did not see anything that I need there. We then started on the rest of the floor. I soon saw a nice Mexican coin and bought it. I saw an1738 Escudo in PCGS 53 with the Eliasberg name on the holder. I do not have a coin from his collection and thought that it would be neat to own one. I thought that the price was a little aggressive, so I passed. We continued around the floor but had only covered about 70% by closing time.
We left the show and drove to the Rose Garden Cafe for dinner. I had the Pork Chops (3), and she had Tilapia. It was very good!
We arrived at the show on Wednesday a little after 10 AM. The show was busy. We started on the floor where we had left off on Tuesday. I found nothing else on the first pass. I went back to look at the Eliasberg coin, but it had been sold. Darn.
I saw a Large Cent that was nice and at a fair price and I bought it. I saw a 1793 Wreath Cent in NGC S65 Bn. Holy crap! I think that it is the most amazing coin I have ever seen! Also saw a complete 1885 Gold Proof Set in PCGS 66-67 CAM and DCAM all with a CAC sticker. Amazing. Also saw a complete 1857 Copper and Silver Proof Set in PCGS 63-65. We left the show in late afternoon and went back to my favorite restaurant. I had Ocean Perch and she had the Chicken stir fry. Very good.
We arrived at the show on Thursday about an hour after it opened. There was a line to get badges and there was a large crowd. I saw two Large Cents that I needed and bought them. I saw a canvas bag marked " 1927 Philadelphia $20 gold $5000 ". It was priced at $5000. I have never seen one. We went over to look at the Ship of Gold exhibit. It is super nice. We next went to view the exhibits. They were nice. At 3 PM we went upstairs to the ANA Awards reception. I did not think that the food was as good as last year. We left the show soon after that and went to dinner. I had the Jumbo Shrimp and she had fried Cod. Very good.
After breakfast at the hotel on Friday, we got on the road at 8:05. We had numerous construction slow traffic areas and two short rainstorms. We arrived home at 6:30. We had a great time together.
Next year the ANA is in Pittsburgh. I can't wait to get on the road again..........................

Great report. Thanks for writing it up. I know how much effort that takes as I did one as well. Congrats on 52 years and enjoy the 53rd.

Great report, and remarkable track record for attending the ANA convention!
Now let’s see those large cents!
I did not see a single US 58+ coin. I saw one world coin in 58+.
@golden... Thanks for an excellent report and congratulations on 52 consecutive shows. Cheers, RickO
Next year at Pittsburgh..................Yahoo!!
I forgot to mention that a hot dog and a bag of chips were $11.25!
thanks for the report, wish my daughter had some interest in coins! Sounds like you had a great time. And some good food!
Good report. Thanks, very informative.
Thanks for the report -- that is a stunning streak of ANAs. Probably not too many can match it - Julian probably.
I took a look at the concession stand and decided I could eat the airplane food on my flight home.

I would guess that there are only about 10-12 members that have been to 52 or more consecutive conventions. Maybe less. I did not see one member there that also started in 1970. There was one member there that went to his first show in 1950 , but he has missed some. As far as I know the record now is 65 consecutive shows held by QDB. The last one he attended was 2019.
Thank you for sharing you experiences at the show!

Great report...
Not to nitpick but... The thread made me hungry.
The only times that I have been to Baltimore was when the ANA was there. I have only missed 4 FUN shows since 1973.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. I enjoy your perspective. Peace Roy

Insane streak! I don't think I could attend all those even if they hosted it across the street from my house every year.
@golden Thank you for the report!
Did your daughter find anything she likes? ☺️
Not to nitpick but…your post had me looking for Holy Water.
