Unfortunately it is a bit too far gone for my taste. The toning is too dark, fingerprint, and dark streaks. It’s the kind of coins I would try to conserve somehow but it likely can’t be made whole again.
I guess so with at least 5 people bidding. A bit too rustic for my taste too.
Not all bidders for coins like them or think they’re at all pleasing to the eye. Many simply bid at levels at which they think or know they can flip for a profit.

Some appreciate the level of originality that one has. I'm a lover of original skin and crust, but am not really a fan of that one overall, even though it has nice luster underneath. How does the reverse look?
Regarding conservation, probably would help in one way, and hurt in another. Until you know what you're doing, I'd leave the thought of conservation alone.

@pursuitofliberty yeah I was just curious. I'm going to pass on it but I find it beneficial to get feedback to see if my thinking is at least somewhat reasonable.
@spyglassdesign well, other than the negative eye appeal from the toning, finger prints, streak and carbon spotting, the underlying surface quality (luster, strike and lack of distracting marks) is the right kind of stuff to be looking for

@pursuitofliberty that's what I'm thinking. It's several hundred dollars though... More than I'm willing to risk. I do see what you mean about the other factors tho.
Fair enough. Suppose I gave you several reasons and you disagreed with them all. It still wouldn't change the fact that I liked the coin and you presumably didn't. Not everybody agrees on what's attractive.
@MasonG true. But I try to be more open minded than that when it comes to coins as I'm still learning. If someone says this particular factor hurts/helps it, I'm going to add that to my data set I've been consuming. For instance if someone says to pay attention to a certain feature because it could indicate a problem or highlight, I'm going to make use of that data for evaluating coins.
As you say ultimately it comes down to what I like, but I do value the opinions here since many of you are far beyond where I may ever be.

A lot of it comes down to what your goals are. If it's buying coins you like, you can just do that. If you're concerned about what you can sell them for when you're tired of them, that's another story.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

@spyglassdesign... It may be attractive to some collectors, but I believe the majority (great majority) would find it ugly. I am one of the majority. Cheers, RickO
For my part, I do find it attractive. Even the fingerprint is tolerable; though for me it's a matter of contrast and i admit this print shows more contrast than I'd like.
Notwithstanding, I like coins with character
and this one qualifies.

Don't worry about what others think. All that matters is whether you like it or not.
However, nothing wrong with asking if you're on the fence
My opinion FWIW = pass

What do you think the chances of a coin like that being able to be conserved by the likes of pcgs would be? Fair?

Nope.

I can't handle a coin with an etched in finger print. Great coin otherwise.......

Suppose I disagree with what you think is reasonable. Would that encourage you to change your mind?
@MasonG by simply disagreeing, no. But if you gave me some reason to think differently I would certainly take it in and consider it.

Any toning that can reasonably be described as "charcoal" is pass for me.
I personally see that as highly NEGATIVE eye appeal.
For your viewing pleasure.

"1854-O Arrows Seated half dollar, NGC MS62, very pleasing" ?????
Individually, I don’t think any of those issues on the obverse would stop me from purchasing a coin I liked. All of them at one time is a bit much
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
Negative eye appeal on a coin that probably can't be successfully "conserved". A coin that will be a problem for its owner when it comes time to sell.
Ugly blotchy toning. Not for me.
