Suggestion for Showing Valuable Coins

I am working on a high grade Large Cent Type set that PCGS defines as 7 coins. I now have the last 4 and am looking for the next earliest. I plan on attending an EAC related show in Austin in early September. Since I do not want to carry the coins along to discuss them, I decided to download the max resolution TrueView images and take them to Walgreens to get 8x10 prints. I think they are very impressive and will work just fine to get the points across. Just a suggestion if someone ever has such a need.

Sounds good. I always use Walgreens for prints. They very often have coupon codes for either 40% or 50% off enlargements, so I hunt for one of those before completing my order. This way the $4 8x10 costs either $2.00 or $2.40 plus tax instead of $4.00.

I never “take” things to Walgreens for prints, but just upload them from home. It’s so much easier, and their online editing tools, while not very advanced, are good enough.

One problem though to be aware of - the final color of your print will vary from one Walgreens to another, based on their settings on their machine. I did an experiment one time, ordering the same print from two nearby Walgreens. Different output from each. So while the details of your 8x10 True View might be great, keep in mind the color might be different from the actual True View.

    Pictures and color?

This is something that goes way back. I can remember ads talking about how one photo print shop would produce better color or more real color. Also the paper that was used and how it could/would impact color. S&G did the song Kodachrome.

But it is a little deeper than just the print. The actual photo color may or may not be correct and this includes the true views. There are some threads related to the TV and color being off and in particular noting the 'reds'.

Also the monitor being used to look at the photo or TV can shift colors some. Go shopping for a television and one can see how they can produce different shades and colors. Same thing applies to monitors for laptops or phone screens. Additionally there are setting on these that can shift the colors.

Finally even when viewing in hand if one has a few different types of light you can get some changes in the colors depending on type of light and intensity.

I recall when I got my automatic digital camera about 20 years ago, still the only one I have, to take scenery photos, that I tried it out on some set coins. Printed them on 4x6 photo pages and put them in a small ring binder to carry to shows. Still have those but now use a small tablet. It worked fairly well and this is from someone who is not a photographer at all, just click and shoot.

That’s a good idea, much safer than carrying around the actual coins and you don’t need a loupe to see details because the pictures are so much bigger than the actual coin.

If someone wanted a more permanent sturdy image than a paper print, I recently made an art photo of a modern proof coin into an aluminized photo to display in our living room. I got it online from https://aluminyze.com/ and it came out pretty good. This was just with an iPhone picture I took of the coin, it would most likely come out even better if you used a TrueView because of the greater resolution. I’m thinking of ordering a few more and will probably start off with TrueView images of some Seated Half Dollars

The photos do/did work well at least for me. I did not go with the big photos. I used 4x6 photo paper and on many I would have 2 or 3 coins (obv and rev) photos on that one 4x6. It depends a little on how many coins you want to have photos of and how much or large or small one likes the binder to be. Here is my old photo book with magnifier for size that I carried around at shows. About the size of a small/medium tablet.

Has anyone ever tried any of those glass photos that they have online? They look good in ads (of course).

If you are talking about a lot of coins, then the photo representations would be ok. If only talking of a few coins, then why not just have them available from your residence with someone with a cell phone and show them via video or photo with whatever enlargements or viewpoints needed for the coin?

If you've never done prints from high quality photos, I highly recommend it. Walgreens is OK for quick and cheap, but heed the warnings about color being unpredictable. I've used Winkflash for nicer prints, and even 2'x3' posters. Their color is very consistent. If you want more luster in the pictures, try the metallic paper.

@Mr_Spud... I really like that gold Buffalo display picture. I will likely do that with a couple of my coins.... Thanks for the link and showing the product. Cheers, RickO
