Throwing Back Random/Common Coins
![OAKSTAR](https://us.v-cdn.net/6027503/uploads/userpics/L0MTTNKGCUFL/n4EE9PYQ7J9KC.png)
@Che_Grapes recent thread reminded me of this.
During my travels, I routinely put random or common coins back into circulation..... wheat cent, worn Buffalo nickels or even worn IHC from time-to-time, in the hopes some young kids find them and spark their interest in collecting.
The point of this thread: If you guys find them, please throw them back. Thanks!
P.S. Although, I would keep that 1899 as well! 🤣 😀

I do too... I have a small container of loose change and drop any Wheat Cents and Buffalo Nickels in it. It's almost full, so I'll make a Coinstar trip soon.

I'm fairly sure most of us have a pot of common date wheats or undated coins like buffalo nickels. Good idea. I will join.
Also doing here. Usually Buffalo nickels.
Well... I am guilty of keeping wheat cents and Buffs... and any Merc dimes as well. Sorry, just cannot seem to part with them. Cheers, RickO
I have the same sickness.
Agreed, RickO

This is against the rules of Scrouge McDuck! 🥸
@ikenefic just an fyi, the coin star will reject any coins like that…
I'd rather give them to a YN than just spend them but to each his own.

If the posts had one of these icons, (👎🏻) I'd have to use it on @ricko & @Treashunt ....
But it doesn't, so you guys are good! 😂 🤣

During Coin Week I spend 4 or 5 rolls of wheaties and a roll or two of Buffaloes. Rest of the year fewer of these two.
Hmmm... I've not had a problem with wheat cents and Buffalo Nickels in the past, but it's been a while since I've tried it...

I use impaired Ike Proofs overseas in donation boxes (i.e. museums, cathedrals, etc.). Why not let someone have a neat discovery of a "foreign" coin.
I held back two rolls of Wheaties when I liquidated Lincoln Cents. One roll is 1909 to 1930s dated, and the other is 40s and 50s. I'll likely have a Giveaway for those.
There were just too many Wheat Cents taking up too much space... and my garage isn't as big as the guy's with the Mother of all Wheat Cent Hoards...![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

love some catch n release!
left a buff and wheaty from recent CRH finds on the counter at the bank after the clerk stated they cant/wont hand em out to someone, kids?, coin collector or whatever. i figured they'd have people in mind that ask them to keep an eye out for such things.
now i think about it, i should've left em by the coin counting machine which is all the way across the lobby!
Great idea!
I get from my bank $2 bills, Ike dollars when they have them, “golden” dollars, and Kennedy halves, and use those every time I spend cash.

Sorry, but a collector is a collector.
I feel bad spending something that may never be found

Yes, if you belong to a local club or know of one, you might donate them there and have them directed toward an interested party. The other way, the chances are high that the coins will just circulate until they are worn and withdrawn and melted.
I can barely see the dates; could you guys toss some better ones?
Then I bet you're gonna love this one!! 😂 🤣 😂

Oh those are so cool! I think I may have seen a few smaller ones like that...just be VERY sure they close up tight and keep all the rain out! We REALLY need more of those so books don't needlessly go to waste.

type a colon, then start putting a random character/number/symbol (one at a time) after the colon and see what recommenations pop up. i think this iteration of the forum may have hundreds of emojis.
A dislike or thumbs down icon would probably be used a lot on this forum. 😂 🤣

Yes, you wouldn't want to hurt peoples sensitive feelings nowadays.

That’s a good idea - old album or folder with a “starter” set - maybe specify for age 13 or younger
You’re probably wasting your time. Young kids don’t use money nowadays.
Nice idea anyway.![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Though the thought is nice and I might hope that tossing some into the wild might excite some youngster, I think the odds are pretty slim. Not zero so keep it up if that floats your boat!
I’m basing my odds on some observations of a bunch of neighborhood kids a few years back when I ‘lost’ a handful of fully dated Buffalo nickels in a dirt area they were often playing and digging around in with their little toys. They found them, but didn’t seem to give a hoot. I even went out there to shoot the breeze with them- asking if the had “found anything interesting with all their digging around?”. They were ho-hum about their finds- even when I tried to express some wonder and enthusiasm as to just how old the coins were. They were nearly 100 years old!
Though I was disappointed with these particular kids responses, I still have some hope that there are other kids that might have acted differently and gotten a charge out of it.

Someone here did the same thing awhile ago in one of these threads, I can't remember who. He put an old Whitman Lincoln cent folder, with a few random Wheaties in one of these roadside Library boxes with a nice note. I can't remember exactly what the note said but it was very nice.
I want to write to same note. Does anyone remember this?
