Jokes aside, nice giveaway and a great way to lure lurkers from the woodwork into active participation because I was one of them for a very long time on many boards trying to understand and feel my way through.
My last post here (August 8, 2022 11:25AM) was my first as a lurker with 5 stars. Even if I fail to make the case for 5 star lurker eligibility only for this contest, I have reminded myself that my 20th anniversary is coming up in October so might be the time for mr1874 to crack out the bubbly and host another giveaway contest. Lurker or no, 5 stars or only 1, giveaway contests here are always fun.

I don’t qualify, as this is my 2nd post in 20+ years and not my first. Honestly I feel intimidated to post, as there is so much knowledge here and I am just a dope in a world of people with wisdom and class. Even after 20 years I still have a lot to learn. But over the years I have been building a primary dark side collection of Great Britain 1820-ish through 1920-ish, and recently evolved to US type, 1830 onward. I find it difficult to stay disciplined and wait for a great coin. Curious to hear how others do it. But in 20 years, this is the first post to encourage a generation-long lurker like me to post. So THANK YOU!!!!

Hey, there's a few people here who are lacking in one or both of those areas (speaking for myself here! ) so don't feel too bad, you should fit right in

@johnnyb That is awesome dude!
Again, I would not be intimidated by the so called powerful minds here as they will typically chime in to help with any question you may have. Though they may silently give pity on your soul they largely just ignore me
So I think I might’ve figured this out.
I will just need to take notes of who and when. And I will need to back track in case a person posts at 1 but then May have 30 more posts by the end of the game.
In which case I would have to go back and date time their other posts.
Yikes, a little bit of work as I honestly did not expect this good of a turn out.
If this keeps up the prizes will surely go up too.
Just to be clear the main prize will go to the winner of persons of their very first post. And the secondary prize is for the winner of anyone who posted at 150 or less.
If we hit 100 or better absolute first timers then the silver may end up being the secondary prize and gold for first.
So keep ‘‘em coming!
@Coinscratch Great job on bringing in the true enthusiastic ☺️ Note each poster stat from the very beginning into 2 separate column so no need to track back 😘
Thanks.
I don't always think it was a wise choice as I am at the stage where I have one of most dates. Now I'm looking to upgrade quality, or delve deeper into varieties.

Way Cool! Another Type Set collector... 3rd attempt at a 7070 for me, but this time it WILL get finished! I'm on the last 12 or so coins for completion and I have some of the more difficult pieces out of the way...
Welcome aboard!!
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
OK, I'm a lurker and I'll bite.
I've been collecting on and off for the last 42 years. Once I graduated from college and worked full time, I started out as a type collector (I do have a 7070 folder about 70% complete) but moved on to focus on Walking Liberty Halves and Jefferson Nickels. Most of my collection was obtained from the multiple Long Beach coin shows I attended when I lived in Southern California. I'm really fond of the 1934 to 1949 era of coins and am hoping to complete a full certified MS set of that date range, and perhaps a full date proof set or two from that era. I also collect modern world silver and bullion when a design interests me.
At this time I have so many other priorities that I can't focus on coins as much as I'd like to, but if my time and finances free up I'm hoping to learn more and make more positive contributions. Meanwhile I enjoy and appreciate reading and learning from the experts here.

I’ve been lurking. I actually have a few other hobbies/projects that I’ve been busy with. Right now I’m making a large business sign for an old friend who recently started a new business. Between my job, which is also my business (a restaurant), and my 2 grandchildren (a 1yr old and a 5yr old), I have very little time or energy left over for anything else, lol. Luckily, though, I do have a wonderful fiancé who helps take care of the house and the kids and whatever else that needs to be done.
Hey bud Those are growing on me and I have a few in the process currently (by the way thanks for the one you sent me a couple years back (it still looks PL)) being graded a 64 proof ddo, 72d, 76d, and an 82.
Changing series, it’s like tuition all over again. Anyway, those coins look amazing at 67 and above.
I have been lurking for 20+ years and signed up years ago but never posted. I collected Lincoln Proofs 1909-1955 in the 1990's, then sold all the MPL's when I got big into Ebay and everything just became "stuff" for me. I have always like the history related to coin collecting and have visited ANA in Colorado Springs and 4 different mint buildings(more if you count all the different ones in Philly).
I recently got back into casual collecting when an idea was posted on these board about collecting large cents for under $20 a coin. It seem like a great way to find interesting coins and not have to worry money. I do a lot of solo vacationing while my wife attend conferences and it afforded me a new activity to help explore a city on my own. I now have David Bowers guide book on Half/Large cents and a Dansco album. I try to pick out G+ examples that have some type of visible die crack. I has been fun so far and it does offer a way for my wife/kids to purchase me inexpensive presents.
Thanks.

It Is definitely a very deep abyss, one that I've fallen into far enough that I can't get out!
How long have you been working on the large cents?
A number of years, it started with a purchase of an abandoned safety deposit box with a lot of type coins. That restarted my coin collecting habit after a long break (from about 15 to 40 years old as life got in the way)
I started focusing on the large cents maybe 5 years ago, and since sold most of my non copper type coins.
I use the dansco album, and added many of the over dates in the blank slots on the last page.
Thanks.

Wow, looking good! I see a couple overdates missing still... the 1799/8, the 1836/5... JK, I know those 2 are a **little ** pricey!
I still need the 1826/5 and the 1824/2 but I have most of the other ones

There were only so many extra openings, I figured the 1799/8 may be a long time coming so I left it out in favor of those shown. Maybe some day I will add a page, but the dansco is pretty tight now. Haven't heard of a 1836/5. Do you mean the 1839/6?

I've gotten to the point where I have 2 albums with 6 pages each, 1 whole album is entirely blank pages for varieties...
Yes, I meant the 1839/6, whoops I almost bought one of those at a coin show a couple months ago but I just couldn't get past the asking price, it was a PCGS G06 and they were asking $850 firm... Still looking
I'd love to see the rest of your collection, based on the picture you posted it's a really nice one, I've been working on Large Cents for close to 4 years now and it is very rewarding!

No, not at all! I encourage all engagements here. Sure its a contest but it's main design is for people to engage and create relationships so carry on my friend
Baby boomer collector/lurker here. I first tried signing up in 2006 but somehow I blew it and was unable to post, hence I became a lurker. My primary interest then was collecting business strike Longacre bronze. I have since broadened my interests and knowledge in great part due to having followed thousands of quality postings. I now have a good idea of who is who and I promise not to post any rare road kill Lincoln varieties.
@96grains You know, some people actually eat road kill. I'm not one of them but I've heard. Well, thanks for coming out of the shadows and joining in.
This thread reminds me of a scene in a movie but I just haven't figured it out yet. This guy (sergeant) was talking about aliens or something and he says, "They walk in the shadows, it's a covert operation" and I just remember the seriousness on his face and how it made me laugh, anyway...
Ok you got me, here is my first post. I started collecting as a kid but just recently became more serious about it. I’m still learning and this discussion board has definitely been helpful.
Colonials and early American coins are my thing, specifically I love the Nova Constellatio Coppers.
Well, I have been a "lurker" for many years and decided to register. This site has been great as I have learned alot on many subjects!! I have a passion for large cents and just need some of the early dates to complete a date run. Since registering, I plan on participating in future discussion and will post some of my coins for review/comments. Thanks all for making this a great site!
Good gravy, half these lurkers are interested in large cents! I better watch out lol
That's great, and very understandable, I'm past the "interested" stage... I've graduated to "addicted"

lol... yeah, I wonder how many of these "newbie" LC collectors have beaten me out on the last few auctions I've lost!
I wouldn't classify myself as "addicted" but early copper definitely feeds into my OCD...
Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;
Well well well. The biggest takeaway/agreement for me and the Lurkers thus far is that there is one major common denominator and that is, we all learn tremendous amounts simply by listening. I'm impressed, in fact though I'm fairly active, a lot of times I'll just read as well and then pick up on something. Inevitably, that will send me back to my small collection looking to see if perhaps I do have that 75 No S or that 82 No FG. etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.etc.etc......

Member / Lurker for maybe a year... Still learning
collected as a kid and refound the interest 20+ years later
Barbers are my thing - I'm drawn to that period of US history.
Thnx - J
There were only so many extra openings, I figured the 1799/8 may be a long time coming so I left it out in favor of those shown. Maybe some day I will add a page, but the dansco is pretty tight now. Haven't heard of a 1836/5. Do you mean the 1839/6?
I've gotten to the point where I have 2 albums with 6 pages each, 1 whole album is entirely blank pages for varieties...
I almost bought one of those at a coin show a couple months ago but I just couldn't get past the asking price, it was a PCGS G06 and they were asking $850 firm... Still looking
Yes, I meant the 1839/6, whoops
I'd love to see the rest of your collection, based on the picture you posted it's a really nice one, I've been working on Large Cents for close to 4 years now and it is very rewarding!

Sorry @Coinscratch, I just realized I was probably straying too far from the original topic, my apologies, wasn't trying to hijack your thread.

No, not at all! I encourage all engagements here. Sure its a contest but it's main design is for people to engage and create relationships so carry on my friend
Lurkers are not supposed to be seen by neighbors.
C’mon C’mon 🥰
Out of the bushes and shows us you stripes ☺️
Well, I have been a "lurker" for many years and decided to register. This site has been great as I have learned alot on many subjects!! I have a passion for large cents and just need some of the early dates to complete a date run. Since registering, I plan on participating in future discussion and will post some of my coins for review/comments. Thanks all for making this a great site!
Hi Yall, I think I have a couple of posts but I am very interested in early coppers such as large and half cents.

They say we only use 10% of our brain so I must approaching 5
