GTG 1940-S Walking liberty half.

Alright folks its been a while since I've posted anything. I just got this 40-S and I'd love some opinions on it. So please GTG and give me your thoughts.

Still working on my photography skills. As I believe I did last time I'll post the grade in 24ish hours. Thanks in advance everyone.

nice strike!

I'll kick it off with AU-58. Seems to be some light circulation marks to the right of lady liberty.

It is a fairly well struck 40-s... the look is not resonating well for me. I am at 62

Hard to see the luster from those pics but at least 63.
For what it's worth I believe much of that to be die polish.
MS64, maybe 65. I keep going back to the marks to the left of and between the T and Y in Liberty, and wishing I could see that part closer up or from a different angle. How bad those dings are could make a big different on where in the MS range it falls.
61-62? That right obverse field has something goin on. Pleasant look to it though.

Not the best picture but here is a slightly blown up photo of that area.
Exceptional strike for a 40S, far above average.
I’m at 62, but could be as low as 58.
Better illumination of the right field area of the obverse would be helpful.
I'll say 63

I landed at 62, but I was close to details. I don’t like the disturbances in the obverse fields, and they don’t all look like die polish lines to me. Nice strike!

Sensational strike.
Looks like signs of circulation, in that right facing field, so I'll go 58.

since the right field is dark in all the images but there is enough angles to show some funkiness with those lines, i gotta be in the unc details camp. the rest of the coin is pretty sharp.
Strike is decent for a 40S, maybe just the photo but the surfaces look funky and the luster very subdued. I would call it cleaned AU details, I'm guessing that PCGS market graded it MS64.

Such a strong reverse.
I am thinking MS64. Nice coin overall.
(I know angled shots will sometimes show hairlines that are not as prominent otherwise.)

Are Trueviews discouraged or encouraged for a guess the grade?
Encouraged, but I wouldn’t add it now after so many have already guessed. Add it whenever you post the grade.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
Thanks for the GTG. I'm not sensing a lot of luster. Right field seems to show some minor lines.
GREAT STRIKE. To see legitimate thumb separation on a 40-S is an event.
64
63.
This has me second guessing my guess that it's as high as 64-65 as it looks pretty rough below and around the motto, but I'll stick with it anyway
MS-62 This one looks similar in my eyes to a coin posted in the Hayes Barber thread, where the obverse looked like it could be a 58 but the reverse was pristine and looked totally mint state. The coin in that thread received a 62 so...
From the pics looks like muted luster but strike is hammered for a 40-S. I will guess 62.
It looks like a hammered 64 to me. I think the muted luster is precluding it from a 65.
Textbook 58.
Great strike for 40 S, a great strike. I feel it must be a 58. One of the worst struck coins in the series. To find one in AU58 is hard. My 64 was not struck nearly as well. I like it.

62 but needs dip remove surface haze - pass
I'll say 62, but with a very well struck obverse. Not sure if those are hairlines or die polish lines in the obverse fields, the 40-S is known for them.

I will call it a MS63.... I like WLH's, so tend to be generous with them....Cheers, RickO
Those look like die polish lines around the motto. 40-S doesn't come nicely struck as a rule; this piece is one of the better struck examples I've seen. My only issue is with the luster but it could be some light dusky tone that is subduing it. I think the label says 65.

Alright folks sorry I took a little more than 24 hours. So far very few have got this one right and I do believe my photography skills may have held this one back a little. That being said there's something going on in the right obverse field. The coin has quite a bit of die polish on it as well as some haze. I believe that combined with some hairlines and faint marks is what everyone is picking up on. I don't know if I would go so far as to say its circulated or cleaned but I am still learning. The strike is exceptional and the reason I bought the coin. I'm hoping to end up with most of the tougher 40's SF mint coins with a solid strike.
Here is the TrueView I should have posted in the OP with the cert removed. I think it's actually quite close to the in hand look.
My final thoughts with this coin are: I don't know exactly what's going on in that right obverse field. It gives me pause. The luster isn't comparable to most of my Philly and Denver walkers but placed next to my 41 S and 42 S it seems very similar, much more satin and less flashy. Is luster in the same way as strike variable by mint? All in all I'm satisfied with this one. I would love to hear anyone's thoughts given the reveal.
Nice coin.
Also a sincere thanks to everyone who guessed and commented. I really appreciate it.
This is the previous MS66 40-S I had in my set, I replaced it with a 66+ (sorry no photos of the 66+ yet). Comparable to your coin in most ways; but both this and my current 66+ have more flash to them then your coin shows in the photos. This coin also has some die polish in the right field around IGWT.

You should be very confident in the grading given both PCGS and CAC have affirmed it, and they have seen the coin in hand vs. just photographs. I looked at some of the other 40-S coins on CoinFacts and some do have similar characteristics to yours, including the die polish lines and the reflectivity(?) in the fields. There’s still something I dislike about the fields though, which the TrueView only reinforced, but I really don’t know MS Walkers at all.
Nothing is as expensive as free money.
The slab shot that you posted looks a lot better and I don’t see the hairlines, in that photo, as much. Luster is a little muted but the strike is great. All in all a very nice coin. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Seems we can circle back to the problems grading from an image... especially at certain higher level grades. The 1940-s features some incredible die polishing that create unusual fields/surfaces.

I always thought of upgrading to a 66 but I like this coin TOO MUCH and it is in an OGH.
The strike is above average and it has blinding luster with very smooth surfaces.

@coinbuf and @Walkerfan those are a couple of really nice coins! Thanks for sharing them. I have a feeling upgrading this one may take me a little while. This issue wasn't an easy one to locate for me. Many many coins with no left thumb to speak of out there and my price point keeps around MS65. Thanks again for sharing everyone. I always get so much out of the commenters here.
I was tight. It shows you can’t always grade from a picture. Great coin!
