Looking for example graded Morgan...

I'm looking for a reasonably priced MS65 or so Morgan, no year in particular. What I'm wondering is what your guys' take is on ANACS for these coins? Are they reliable for this coin and at that grade? Or should I stick with the top 2? Not really concerned about resale value as much as being able to get a good reference piece for comparing other coins to.
TIA!

I had several in a recent auction (not eBay) NGC, ICG, and ANACS graded MS65. None of the coins met my pf $85.
Stick to NGC or PCGS as you are looking for a reference piece, in fact you would be well advised to find a CAC approved coin for your purpose. You can find many very nice MS65's in ANACS holders. However, if you are not sure what to look for you may end up with a less than desirable example which you will be using as a reference point.

As a single reference piece for MS65 graded Morgans this will be a little difficult. Not only can they vary significantly from mint to mint and from some dates to others but there is a variance in the grading from just barely to top end. Also there are variance in the details or factors that make it a 65 - strike, luster, contact marks (I will leave the eye appeal out). So what I am saying is if you have a 65 that is very clean on the contact marks but the luster is weak or off with an average strike it would not compare well with say a mid 1880's CC with a good strike and booming frosty luster but more contact marks.

Very true, from mint to mint, the variations in Luster, strike, contact marks, etc. there’s a lot of different looks you can seek. But have fun and be patient. 👍

Yeah. I like @lilolme idea... Finding a CAC coin... But on the flip side that would make it at the high end. If I'm using it for comparison purposes it seems I might want something more towards the middle of the grade?

Not necessarily, a CAC coin would be nice you know you have a solid coin for the grade...

I have one that’s a 65 CAC, it’s a CC mint, and one that’s 65 without a sticker, I actually think the one without the sticker is nicer…
(No CAC)

Basically my point is buy the coin you like regardless of CAC status.

I guess that makes sense. Ultimately I guess I will just have to find one I will like to look at and that looks like fair 65.

This!
As a start, if you haven't done so already, go to the PCGS Coin Facts web site. They have a Photo Grade section with all the major coin types and good pics for each type in all the grades from low to high. It's a great reference and it's free.

I agree with @PerryHall ... A bit of homework, review actual coins once you have studied your interests, and then pick the one you like best. Cheers, RickO
I've probably been to the app hundreds of times in the last month 😅 thanks!
