Picked this up at the LCS today. For the price I simply had to have it. Guess the grade.

These pictures put more emphasis on the luster. Really a wonderful coin in hand.

Can't quite tell from the pics but it looks damaged, I don't think it straight graded because of the size of the hits in the reverse field and on the eagle, so I'm gonna say AU Details.

I don't know of it's the pictures, but we've got one heck of a range of guesses. 50 or 53 would be my guess, but I don't trust the photos.

From the photos, I’ll wager a guess at 53.

I'll go with AU53 as the 18-S comes weakly struck I feel they graded it higher than AU50.

I'm not terribly familiar with this series, but it seems to have nice luster remaining with some of the high points showing rub.

@Coinscratch and @WilliamF were the only ones who got it right.

Yeah so I saw this in the dealer display case and it… spoke to me. Seemed very nice for an AU coin. Given the price tag I expected the reverse to be ugly but… it isn’t that bad. The coin has such great eye appeal otherwise that the couple digs were not a big problem to me. So this one went home with me. I bought the coin, not the slab, and think $50 was a great price. Basically 20-25% of what I’d pay for a clean 55 or 58. And also SLQs are a beautiful design and having a lustrous one is a sight to behold.

Agree, you can't beat that price. Disagree, with everyone who didn't see the gouges they were pretty obvious unless you were looking through a cell phone.

  • jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 9,998 ✭✭✭✭✭

So are these black marks the obvious die gouges?

Boy, they do not look like gouges to me, but something that might come off with an acetone dip. I saw them immediately upon seeing the coin, but did not think at all that they were gouges of any kind, but perhaps stains of some kind. Live and Learn.

ya. i didn't look it over close-enough before posting a grade guess. those are pretty severe and i would expect a detail grade now that i've looked it over some more, unless somehow, the peeps at anacs missed them having the coin in-hand which would be tough to believe.

they are more apparent in this blown-up image of the op image:
