for my part, the mods have been allowing too much of the newbie craziness, so it is not in our hands. it is nice to have new blood but it is coming at a steep cost.
also, we can easily ignore the threads/users. i doubt everyone likes yours, i know everyone doesn't like mine and there are others i am not a fan of. illud est quod est, ya know?
the last major change (software) to this new format was a VERY rough transition for everyone or so it appeared. we don't have a software change this time but something has changed nonetheless. we have really 2 choices, embrace it or ignore it.
I cut back on my visits to the forum because of this type of silliness...... The mods really seemed to get a handle on the situation by not letting newbies post photos.....In my opinion that was a very, very creative solution...... Good work mods!....But, I'm back.....I like the forum too much. Why let something so silly bother me?.....Just ignore it guys....

That's the hardest part. Not responding.
Let the Mod's put them down, and let us pull some older, interesting or informational threads to the top to move this dribble into obscurity.
But the mods don't seem to be helping much. It doesn't seem to matter how many times obvious nonsense is reported. Although I noticed that the primary troll hasn't been logged on since Friday (time out maybe?), he is still a member
I tried to be helpful, but it becomes apparent pretty quickly who is seeking actual help with a Sheldon variety versus someone that is either: 1- trying to score big on a bulk bag of dateless Large Cents from an estate sale without doing their due diligence, or wanting to invest the time needed to, and gets pissed off when you tell them what they don't want to hear; or 2- pulling our chain.

I generally do not mind the newbies who are asking legit questions.
The 'alts' - trolls are a different matter... and IMO they are hurting this site. Just because they are bored.. and have nothing better to do with their time... they try to suck others into their games. I am responding less frequently on the 'look what I found - what is it? ' type questions because they are possibly someone just trying to mess with the site. Which unfortunately hurts the newbies who are really interested in learning.
Too bad there is there is a limit of 5 to the ignore feature. Also that those on ignore still show up on when they create a thread on the forum thread list. This is a major limitation.

Plus you can a member's comment that you have on ignore if another member clicks the Quote tab to respond.
fwiw, i don't have anyone on ignore now. despite the peculiar reddit/facebook tendencies the forum has been taking on as of late. (not saying i haven't contributed to these tendencies)
For some people here the hobby isn't actually collecting or finding coins, it's arguing with people online.
Apparently coin collectors are an easy group to argue with.

I don't really mind those threads. Trying to figure out varieties on a corroded piece can be interesting.
The trolls are a different story.
I whole hardily welcome all the newbies that come here for information.
This type of thread (too many newbies) is the opposite of the "hobby is dying" threads

Bring back the good old shadow ban.
A poster can post all they want but no one can see it.
A member earned that treatment a couple years ago. They were eventually unbanned and they are now a (somewhat) productive member of PCGS society.

Quite annoying 🙄

Basic formula of late:
Random person(RP): I have (outlandish claim), what do you think?
Forum members 1-5: That's not what you have.
Expert: It appears that you have (reasonable thing that isn't what RP claimed)
RP: It is what I have and here are several wrong reasons that it is.

I disagree.
I'm just glad it wasn't me!! 😂 🤣
Compared to you "large number of posts" guys, I'm new here.
Let's face it, we don't need (IMO) the MOD's to babysit us. I think you guys do a good job of self monitoring.
Disclaimer: I'm not a dealer, trader, grader, investor or professional numismatist. I'm just a hobbyist. (To protect me but mostly you! 🤣 )
Once I see troll type postings/responses, I just do not open those threads by that member. Not worth the time to read them. Cheers, RickO
Agree. 😉🙀🦫
