AU55 details, cleaned. The color is off for an Indian cent with the "L". I suspect that is why the date has been hidden ... most will think it is copper-nickel when it is actually bronze.

Indeed, did not notice the L.

One the ribbon next to the lowest feather. It was added partway through 1864 on the bronze coins and appears on all later dates.

MS63….has to be 1886 or after due to the bottom feather placement. Rule out the S mintmark. Just a stab and could be completely wrong (probably am wrong)….1896 with the strike weakness.

For what it’s worth, it’s a RB coin that graded BN.

I think I see evidence of some mint luster in the reverse image. So, the piece is at least AU-50 if it received a straight grade. Now, IF I could see color images, I would likely be able to make a better guess.

Since this is all in fun, I'm going to go with "Questionable Color, Uncirculated Details."

It's such a very beautiful coin, should grade higher than MS 63 and would be a shame if it graded lower. (That's my guess too!)

Thanks for the hint. I want to give myself the best chance possible for this lucky penny. It is an attractive piece but I don't think it will quite make choice uncirculated so I'm going with...(drum roll)...
