I've been looking at lots of 58s lately and dang can they look nice. That being said I bet this is a 64.

Here is the reveal. I think it might upgrade. What do you think?

I only see an obverse image, but regardless, I'd leave it in that holder.

Cool coin. Personally I would leave it but you will undoubtedly get an upgrade on reconsideration.

I'm stuck with either 58, 65, or 66. If the coin has no wear, then it is a 65 on the holder with the CAC sticker indicating it should be a 66.

A CAC sticker on a 65 coin doesn't indicate that it should be a 66.

Yes and no. My interpretation is that with the coin being in an older holder, CAC views it not just a choice coin for the grade but even undergraded.

That is one of the best 62 I have seen for that date and mint mark. Air peen strike for an S minted coin.

Chances are very good that if CAC had thought the coin was a solid 63 or better, they would have given it a gold sticker. Regardless, a green CAC sticker on a coin in an older PCGS holder in no way indicates that the coin “should be” a higher grade.

I came to this thread too late but I favored more to the 58 side of the scale. I think Mark has it right....keep the holder with the sticker. And, yes, I do believe if CAC thought it a 63 (or higher) it would have gone with the gold sticker. Another words I wouldn't. Great coin regardless.

Interesting, so let me see if I got this straight because when I think of 62/63 I think about banged up chattered looking mint state coins. So in this case, great luster, slight rub, almost contact free. Hence all the 65/66 guesses but the rub or weak strike drags it down to 58 yet the aforementioned brings it back to 62?

  • 1946Hamm1946Hamm Posts: 783 ✭✭✭✭✭

It's lived in this OGH for a long time and it is going to stay there as long as I have it. I think it is much better than some of higher numbers.
    Thanks all who commented.

There is some post dip yellowing, I assume that is what dropped it but it is still a great coin.

If the coin has great luster, I can’t tell from any of the images. But it does appear to be very clean, with a bit of friction. And it doesn’t look weakly struck.

I think that the images are too poor to render an opinion as to whether or not to crack it. I think I will default to PCGS's and CAC's in hand opinion.

late to the part but these are most likely scans. extremely difficult to accurately gauge surfaces from lower quality scans.

while not many contact marks to hold back from the 65 level +/-, we cannot discern the luster/surface quality, which i bet is low and it probably has slide marks on the high points. just my 2c.

Okay, then I learned something here. I had always assumed 61, 2, and 3 coins could not be clean of marks such as this one which fills a void for me. Never understood how a 58 and 63/4 could be so close to each other while skipping the grades between. And so, you can have a clean looking 62, this is good :)

As just one general example, many Capped Bust Half Dollars that grade in the MS62 to MS64 range have good luster, more than an adequate strike and very clean surfaces. But they also display “cabinet friction”, faint rub or whatever you’d like to call it. We’re it not for that, they’d be MS65 “Gem” examples.

Here are bigger pics. Is there such a thing as an S/S for this year. Right click the scans to see the bigger scans in a new window. Thanks

The more I thought about that image being a scan, the more I realized how difficult that is. I forget how many times thta was a problem back in the early days of the internet.

I would leave it as is.

Thanks Mark I really do appreciate the instruct! And I do agree it does not look weakly struck (my guessing comment from earlier) but in no way would I say it’s hammered as a few have clambered.

Sorry, I watch a lot of Gutfeld! Mr. Feld! :D:)

Someone here called us all on crack for not guessing 67, whatever, after that comment I did not post my guess, had I, I would have guessed 58 but did not want to offend the OP.
Or the other hi MS wags.
I might not be a big maven but I would leave it as is, in that 62 holder with the bean. jmho
