Buying at Heritage online...

heavymetalheavymetal Posts: 604 ✭✭✭✭

I'm interested in buying something from the upcoming Heritage auction of Mr. Fred Weinberg's error coins. I have never attempted to purchase from Heritage and am unfamiliar with their process. Does anyone have any general tips that can help me navigate their process. Thanking in advance, HM.

I have exactly 1 online auction experience (well, ebay aside - and that is few and far between), and it was with Heritage.
That 20% buyers premium certainly makes you "commit" to the bid / purchase, doesnt it? Make sure it is what you really want.
Factor that into tour MAX bid. You may still get buyers remorse, but it'll limit that feeling.
And shipping is pretty high as well. And has been documented in posts here, delivery isnt always "immediate".
In my case when factoring in the 20% BP + approx shipping, I still came in $10s lower than a comparable coin I saw on APMEX, and this one had the gold shield / TruView.
I paid by echeck from my bank, so I set that up.
    ...
I only made one online bid (to my max), and watched my coin come up on the live auction ... a couple of bids came in, bumping my actual bid, and with a few seconds left a few more came in pushing me to my max. I almost had it for a few $100 lower, but ... hey I won.

    Oh, and good luck! B)

Others may have more info for you.

HA frustrates me. Often time, there is a rolling internet portion of the auction followed by a live auction. I cannot tell you how many times I would, "win" the internet portion of the auction, only to be outbid on the live auction. I havent bid there in some time out of frustration!

Many dealings with heritage from bidding in their auctions to straight out sales to them and buying from them on their website. You'll get extremely professional and fair dealings in all cases with very good folks. Register and bid, and you'll get a square deal with them.

Thank you for the link. This cleared up the “Auction goes live” questions I had. HM

LOL! Wait til you bid live! Twice recently I hit the bid button at the wrong time. A millisecond before I bid another bid and woops...the lot advanced another bid increment above what I wanted to bid!

Yeah. Happened to me once. One of the reasons I prefer to just place my max bid and not even watch the auction.

Has it dawned on you that if there was no live auction you still wouldn't have "won"? Those live bidders would have bid earlier.

    Could you be more condescending?

    Yes.

I don't see how that is condescending. The OP seems to be blaming the actual auction for upending wins in the pre-auction. I simply pointed out that the problem is not the presence of the actual auction.

Just remember to account for the fees (buyer’s premium, extra fee for paying with a credit card, tax in some states and somewhat high shipping costs)

Read the fine print and there won't be any surprises.

I've bought from them a handful of times.

Their shipping costs are not high domestically. I don't know why people keep saying that.

They just shipped my 2 error coins and the cost for the 2 coins was $9.05

Last week they sent me 4 slabs for $15.72

Could it be cheaper? Sure. But that is not excessive for insured priority mail.

Nope. No such thing. Having the highest pre-bid doesn't mean you won anything. Live biding happens after pre-bidding closes.

My favorite part of buying from HA is the part where you wait a month to see your coins.

So I guess we know where you DIDN'T get hired as a numismatist?😂

Totally agreed by the way but we definitely over litigated this issue a couple months ago.

My wins from last week arrived in 3 days.
