How do you picture a coin that has a rotated die?

0ronron0ronron Posts: 248 ✭✭✭

I have a 1982 penny that has a slightly rotated die
How do you picture the coin to actually show that?
This is how it is when I flip it straight over.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for first loving us.

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask "How do you picture the coin?". That can be taken different ways.

As for photography, unless a customer asks otherwise, I always rotate it so each side is correctly oriented. If the die rotation is significant it can be measured and cited.

I would not consider the minor rotation of this cent noteworthy.

Anything less than 10% rotated I don't even worry about how the pictures are, it has to be very noticeable for me to make a point of it, here are a couple examples:

Just an actual photo of the obverse and then the reverse exactly as they look. Below is a chart and notice that anything inside 15 degrees is inconsequential and mostly 90 to 180 degrees is required for monetary value increase over a normal coin's orientation.

Rotations of 90 degrees or more in either direction are what command a premium.

I set a coin on edge in front of a mirror once and that worked well, except I got me and the camera in the photo.

Like this: Put the coin in a 2X2 flip. Put in an extra staple so that when you flip the flip the extra staple will indicate the rotation. (Photos borrowed from an eBay auction)

Official Mint tolerance is 27° and I have found in my experience that a coin has to be rotated a minimum of 45° to have any Premium to Collectors of either the type coin or as an error coin

You could also put a mirror behind the coin and adjust the mirror so that both the front and back images show on the same photo.

I like @rec78 's idea. But man, having a staple that close to a coin freaks me out. :#

The staple could be placed anywhere but the idea does work and it is not my idea, I just saw it used in some ebay auctions.

For imaging, I like to line up the obverse and reverse in a correct orientation. If it has a rotation, I typically note anything more than 30% in my descriptions.

Sounds like a few I like, never mentioned monetary value as I considered it to be none with just a minor rotation. Just a slight, hey that's a little off, kinda cool factor. I think I will try the flip with staples as it seems the easiest and most logical for such a slight amount of rotation.

i was going to post this but you beat me!

i've seen people on ebay do this and works pretty well but i'm not sure what staples have to do with it unless i missed something.

Looks like @AUandAG beat both of you to it.

On the 2x2 with the staples, why not just leave the staples out on the top side that is folded and that way you have two less staples.
