Silver 20th century Mexican coins can be a bit of an enigma, because Mexico released so many denominations of sometimes competing weights and purities. But that also means that they can be found at little if any premium to melt, often in BU condition. And, for the most part, they literally say on the face of the coin what the silver purity is to the 3rd decimal point and they show the weight in grams:

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

This is an example of a coin that somebody didn't like and an example of the same type coin that evidently somebody did like. I think it probably had an error on it and that's the reason they probably sent it through the waffle machine.

I have some of these 1970 10 Gulden from Netherland I brought home from overseas in 1972. They were all uncirculated at the time, but due to carelessness they are scratched. They contain 74.6% silver if I remember correctly, if not correct me.

@JWP If your coin can be identified as an 1893-S based on die markers, it may be worth getting slabbed in a "GENUINE" PCGS slab even though it will never straight grade.

There is an interesting yet gruesome story behind this coin and its moneyer. This coin is of type 14 which was minted in 1123. Henry was having difficulty with his moneyers producing quality coins and held an Assize of Moneyers at Christmas of 1124-25. A decree was issued……

“All the moneyers who were in England should be mutilated". This was the order given by King Henry I in 1125. Specifically, they should each "lose their right hand and be castrated." “According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Bishop Roger of Salisbury rounded up the moneyers in the city of Winchester and carried out the grizzly order.

In the aftermath of the assize of moneyers held at Christmastide 1124–25 it has been argued that most of the type 14 moneyers were removed from office in this assize (less a right hand and testicles) and that the sharp reduction in the number of mints between Henry I types 14 and 15 was part of a radical reorganization of the English coinage connected with the dismissal of the moneyers”.

This coin which I am showing would easily be deemed as an inferior example since the reverse legend is in retrograde. And with the study of coins in type 15, which is the last coinage of Henry I, Saric of Shaftesbury no longer appears as a Moneyer for any type 15. And not for the subsequent reign of Stephen either. It can safely be assumed that poor Saric probably lost his right hand and his testicles, maybe even his own life. Pretty cruel punishment, but that was life in medieval times.
