That was close.

Tonight, at the last minute, I place a winning bid on GC for a Large Cent. One hour later the entire neighborhood lost power because of a blown transformer. If it had happened an hour earlier, I would not have been able to place a bid. The power was out for an hour.

Actually, you had all week to place a bid.
Thank you for bidding.
If that ever happens again (hopefully it does not), the GreatCollections website will work on all mobile devices. And you can always call us if you have a phone line access.

Sunday. Glad you got your coin.

But some people don't like to bid until the last few minutes.

How about the last 12 seconds, like me?
Every Sunday night when I bid on GC on lots in those last 12 seconds on my desktop, I also have my iPad set with 4G with that same max bid ready to press “Confirm”, just in case the power goes out. I’ve never had to use it, although there have been times the power went out somewhat earlier, but came back on well before the time to bid.

I know. But that's different than not being able to bid.
In my case, if the bid were prevented by power outage, network crash, or other unplanned disaster, I would just chalk it up and wait for the next opportunity. Never that important to cause stress in my life. Did not have it before, did not get it... Oh well.... Cheers, RickO
LOL! If he was bidding against me it wouldn't matter!
Gotta get that last bid in!

Absolutely true. They returned my call on a holiday weekend. Outstanding customer service.

The timing of the bid is less important than the size of the bid. If I put $1000 bid in on Monday, you can throw your $900 bid in within the last 2 seconds and you still won't win.
You would be surprised! When I stay up and bid at the last minute on ebay, Heritage, or Great Collections I would wager I win more lots more than 50% of the time and at a lower price than when I bid early.
I think you mean “…and at a lower price than when I place my max bids early (on other lots).
I agree with you. While @jmlanzaf is also correct that it only matters if your bid is high enough, I’ve also found that if the max bid is high enough, by placing that high max bid near the very end does not give the underbidder time to think it over and then time to place a new higher bid. Even if you would have ended up as the high bidder had you placed your max bid early, I’m convinced that many times you’ll end up paying more than you otherwise would have paid, since others now have much more time to continually eat away at your lead.

Did the cell towers also go out?
Always good to have a mobile backup!
It's a lottery to me. Throw about a bunch of bids during the week and hope I get lucky.

I have had some close calls as well so I always have two devices ready to go on different internet connections. Home computer with cable modem and iPhone with Wifi turned off.

Yes, I would be VERY surprised if your $900 bid at the end beat my $1000 bid at the beginning. Could you cite an actual example?
Sometimes people are like me and willing to pay what it takes! Need I say more?
But my $1001 bid with seconds to go would!

Yes, but ONLY if the high "Current" bid was at least one increment less than your last second max bid of $1,001, you would beat his hidden max bid by just $1, as you correctly say. If his max bid of $1,000 was also the current high bid, then your last second bid would have to be at least one increment higher than his current bid of $1,000.

Had the opposite happen to me.
The power went out first (very rare here) and I wanted to place a bid.
Power came back on so I was able to place a bid but it wasn’t a successful endeavor. Runner up.

Kennedys are my quest...
Sorry you didn't get the coin butI don't consider that a loss It's just that there was someone else willing to pay more for it. I think if you gave it your best shot with the price you were willing to pay for it
