Counterstamped raised number

Has anyone else encountered a numeric counterstamped coin?
This 2006D memorial has a raised number 6 on the reverse.
I am sure it is not recessed,so I'm baffled because I can't find any others out there

Absolutely recessed. Standard punch

I know pictures can make something look both ways, recessed and raised. I see shadows which makes me believe it is raised also. But it could be recessed. Lol

Yeh, Bobby, the shadows are what got me. I don't know how recessed could cause shadows. Hmmm.

you can see the light source coming from around k3 or so. you can see the light hitting the right side of all the legend/devices except the 6. if it were raised, those black areas within the circles would also have light hitting them, kinda like the inside of the ball of the 6, on the right.
this is a common occurrence among coin and related images. the closer the images get sometimes, the harder to get one's brain to sort out the orientation of raised vs recessed and it takes practice!
anyone else here good with stereograms.
A. It's absolutely recessed/incuse.
B. There is a flattened area on the obverse opposite the counterstamp.
C. The minting process does not provide for a random raised number to appear on a coin.
It's recessed.
post mint damage, says it right there.
I will take a few more shots today
It does look recessed to me... However, pictures - and the human brain/eye - can be tricky as most of us have experienced. A toothpick will confirm the status quickly. Unlikely to raised. Cheers, RickO
Are we both right?
Your latest pictures are just confusing the issue further with different lighting and angles.
There are three ways this number could be raised off the surface of the coin: added/attached to the surface, pushed out from the other side, or someone punched the character into the die.
I see no evidence of the first two options and the third is so unlikely that I'll call it impossible.
Sprinkle some flour on it and then lightly wipe the surface. Where does the remaining flour end up?
I see that it's been listed on ebay without the nonsense of it being raised.

Why all the drama here, then?
I don't want to claim it to be raised unless I know for sure. Why would I do that, unless I have no integrity
I will try the flour option hopefully it's a miracle!
.
i appreciate you trying to list it accuratetly but do you mean to tell us that you CANNOT tell whether it is raised or incuse by looking at the coin in-hand?
you do understand the difference between a mountain and a canyon, yes?
how about this one?
which coin is available in this listing? 61-d or 71-d?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/325248685337
That's definitely recessed. That I can tell.
You have the coin in hand and can't tell if its raised or incused???

Yeah, I'm baffled by that. Pictures lie but a feature that large in hand....
Ok let's just change the subject before my husband throws a nutty...is this high 0 an error on this 10$
For a better response, you should post this in the currency section, not the coin section
Regardless if it's raised or recessed, there is no way that could occur during the minting process. I'm reasonably certain that Members took the time to post links to the minting and die making process when you first started. Go back and look at those links and you'll easily see why this can't happen (hopefully you saved them since they have excellent info)
I don't see the point in stressing over the cause of the PMD. It's damage caused after the coin left the mint. Not an error, not something special, just damaged spare change.
If you're going to continue to for errors, take the time to learn the minting process. It will keep you from wasting a lot of time.
What high zero?
Just a troll from what it looks like

Not everyone is a troll
And not everyone is smart Alec either
You guys can be brutal
Looking at it this way, the "9" definitely looks raised because the ONE CENT looks incuse.

I merely remarked that there has been a lot of trolling activity on the forum recently, mostly from certain posters. It gets tiring at times. I also have no recollection of calling you a troll. The reason this thread can be seen as trolling is because you seemingly don't want to learn about what you have. By saying that you won't go out and find your answer yourself, you are missing out on nearly all of the information out there. There are many professionals here that spend their time free for your knowledge, please take some time and learn about the minting process before asking questions. Searching for your own answers is part of the reason the forums exist. There are decades of information on the forums, just search "PMD" and I would bet ten to twenty similar examples to yours will pop up.
The forum resource thread at the top of the page is a great place to start. I wish you the best if you sincerely wish to learn.

Very well said.
@rodeo514
For most of us on this board, this isn't our first rodeo. If you want to play games and take offense to sound logic and helpful advice, I, for one, would like to see you take your shenanigan's elsewhere.
I did call you a troll this one time. This is a troll thread, and your responses here are troll worthy. I haven't seen your other threads so I will not comment there.

@FlyingAl
Wise beyond your years, and well tempered after an attack response as well. Thank you for being here.

@pursuitofliberty why do you just presume that I'm " playing games"
I've used this forum as a way to learn.ive read about the minting process but that doesn't make me an expert.i searched the forum for words like counterstamp ,imprint, etc ANd ( my bad) thought i would ask an opinion. It doesn't make me a troll, nor am I ignorant. I'm sorry you've had to deal with a lot of trolls, but that shouldn't deter Me from looking for some education from kind neighbors .I'm not trying to be a jerk, but the last inquiry I had, there were a lot of nice people helping, and encouraged me if I had a question on a coin to post it here.
Now that doesn't seem like something you like .I have been down quite a few rabbit holes searching for clues, but when I use this forum it seems that some are so uppity in their knowledge that they belittle others .Get a grip .we can all do without the insults
"encouraged me if I had a question on a coin to post it here."
Keep asking questions, if you don't we will give you a hard time for not asking.
Just be warned that questions sometimes lead to answers.
In this case, 99 cents is moon money for a coin like this - the best advice is to spend it and forget about it. No need for all this fuss over a PMD coin worth 1 cent.
This is ignorant. There are people that collect such things and might be willing to pay $1 for it.
On the other hand, you can't profitably sell something on ebay for $1. It costs 45 cents or so in ebay fees and at least 53 cents postage and a nickel for the envelope is $1.03.
Well, then my statement might be ignorant.
Good point. Another reason the coin is not worth fussing over.
Ignorance is bliss Bid away guys!
I'll let @jmlanzaf have it.
I may bid on it just to cost the OP 3 or 4 cents.

You're initial post was a good optical illusion, and I appreciated that. I was one of the first to post, had to focus a moment, and realize the mechanics of what I was looking at. By the time you were saying you don't know if it's incuse or in relief you were playing games. Even a blind man who had the coin in hand could tell ... actually, most especially a blind man!
I typically stay away from such debate, belligerent tomfoolery, or the kind of diatribe that can follow, but I can tell you, usually it is quite easy to see the spots of a leopard.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

I see the opening bid is now $2.69.
@JBK I did that just for you 🇺🇸🙂
Now you say it's your 6th cent.

Anyway here's another reference without brain freeze.
Then I have at least taught someone something even if it wasn't numismatic.
😊 thanks
