When does your Accumulation become a Collection?

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 8,169 ✭✭✭✭✭

Over the years two main areas of collecting have emerged for me: US Type Coins and Large Cents.

I'm about 10 coins shy of completing my 7070 Type set and I believe the coins I'll have in my Box of 20 will fill in most of the blanks not addressed with the album. In my mind, this is a Collection that makes sense.

I'm also about a dozen coins shy of a complete date run of Middle/Late Date Large Cents... I also have a few raw Liberty Cap, Draped Bust, and at least one raw Classic Head in the box... because I like looking at them from time to time. A complete date run is not an endeavor I'm going to attempt again... I came 3 coins shy (the usual suspects) at one point, but due to the money involved, and I didn't like the looks of low grade copper... i abandoned that set and sold most of it. I'm now concentrating on better looking (surfaces and color) coins for the pieces i do find... but I'm ending up with an Accumulation... not really a "Collection". It's definitely an accumulation I like... but an accumulation nonetheless...

How about you? Do you draw a distinction between the two, or is everything an "Accumulation" of sorts...

There must be some rank and file.

You need a focus (specific series and/or grade).

    You need a goal.

You must have more than 1 or 2.

    Then, it is a collection.

I see no reason to apply a label to what I or anyone else collects, that is just a way to demean others. Collection, accumulation, same thing, collect as you like and what you like.

My collection/accumulation has been and will continue to be an evolving process. Since I got pretty much everything I have on purpose, I consider it a collection.
It’s definitely different now than when I was in high school or college, and I’m very hopeful to be going after a different range of coins in a few years. I still consider the pick ups and gifts from my teens to be a vital part of my collection even if they were cheap compared to what I usually buy now.
If I start buying indiscriminately and not selecting what I like and discarding/selling the rest, then I will consider that stuff to be accumulated and not collected.

A lot of us may have both. A thoughtfully put together collection with a goal, and a bunch of odds and ends that we hang onto for whatever reason.

My definition of a collection will be different than anyone else's. One definition is not right, one is not wrong. Simply enjoy your collection and adding to it as you see fit or moved.

I used to be focused on a collection with tight collecting parameters: Series, denomination, grade and eye appeal. The predicament is that there are a million other coins that you want, but that you ignore to focus on your set.

Not saying one is better than the other, but now I am an accumulator. I buy what has great eye appeal and value for me. It is a hodge podge of all sorts of coins, medals, exonumia etc. Never going back to set building.

An accumulation becomes a collection when you organize it and start looking for the ones you don’t have yet for a particular type or or series

I have a nearly complete collection of PCGS graded Morgan & Peace dollars that adhere to the constraints of one of each coin for the date & MM.

I have an accumulation of Morgan & Peace dollars in rolls, many culls, cleaned, duplicates, etc. as well as an accumulation of gold & silver coins from the US & world.

As I become a more veteran collector with more disposable income, I'll sell the accumulation to upgrade the collection.

I will never sell the collection to upgrade the accumulation.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

The lint in my navel is an accumulation, whereas my coins are a collection. ;)

this comment is really for everyone.

we do really need a youtube thread with 100 or so videos linked in the op, if one doesn't already exist. i clicked on the hansen and nnc videos and hadn't cleared my cookies yet and when i went to youtube home page, it was SLATHERED with coin videos, a couplel random ones proved VERY interesting and enjoyable. one person handling pre civil war gold coins and the other video, someone with a 1942 type set album with some really decent coins while putting fingerprints all over the place!!

Funny, I'm more inclined to do exactly the opposite. I'll sell the 7070 and Box of 20 to fund the Accumulation of Large Cents... I could probably get a decent 1793!! ;)

When each coin is a part of the overall composition of the collection. This is my definition, and does not have to match yours.

Over the years I have acquired and put together an accumulation of collections, almost all of which started as mere accumulations or passing fancies, but then became collections, and those collections are still stand-alone in their own right, with each example having place and purpose.

I collect coins - and I do not give an obese rodent's derriere what anyone else calls it. It is my collection. Cheers, RickO

You can call it whatever you want. Collection, accumulation - it is whatever you want it to be when you want it to be.

When it is first arranged by size, then denomination, then put in some sort of 2x2 or envelope, then photographed and asked opinions on slabbing, then put in boxes, then sold for an accumulation of cash. :p
