Opinions on grade of my raw 1885 V Nickel (Dealer Grade Revealed)

I purchased this from a very reputable dealer about a year ago. They placed a numerical grade on it. Just wondering what everyone else thinks.

The dealer I purchased this from graded the coin as a VF30. Personally I’d grade it at least VF35, but I also believe it could easily grade XF40. Thank you everybody for your opinions and kind words about the coin❤️

I love the look it has, very nice coin.

Thank you Rocco! It was a new listing on the dealer’s website and I didn’t hesitate to purchase it. It’s nice being at the right place at the right time, lol. It’s the first 1885 I’ve ever had.

Another vote for XF40. Nice looking original coin. B)

    A cut above 40. I'm a XF45 because it's so nice and clean markwise.

It's also has its' original skin.

A very nice, original looking coin. A question for all: Is this the type of coin that would benefit from some light acetone dabbing, or do you think the acetone would ruin the original look?

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

Question for the VF guys... PCGS price guide says $1075 for VF30, $1400 for XF40. If you had a coin like the OP's for sale, are you a seller at $1075?

edited to add... And if not at $1075, at what price?

A bit too much wear below the L and I in the hair for XF45. The reverse also is closer to 40 rather than 45.
Sweet coin and worthy of a premium over its grade.
In my opinion, a $1,400 coin.
As far as the verdigris, I wouldn't touch it. XF coins are supposed to have this look rather than being cleaned in the slightest.
That is what gives this one charm.

Great coin, and very tough at the grade level with this look. Excellent shot at getting into a 40 holder.

True, and the 1886 and 12D! Im sure there are several in the mid 1890s that would be tougher in EF not counting the 1888. I completed the set once in AG/VG and in mint state. Never tried it in EF, but I bet they would look great if you could do it. The only EF I think I have now is an 1883 NC.

Sounds like your coin dealer grades conservatively. Most coin dealers only grade conservatively when buying coins from the general public. ;)

Yes he does. I’ve been buying from him for many years and I haven’t ever been disappointed, not once. Very conservative and great prices also.

My own opinion is that it just falls short of a an XF, my first and final impression is VF35.

    My grade would be EF-40.

Take a look at this certified VF35 example I found. I won’t say which grading company, but wow:

  • jedmjedm Posts: 3,068 ✭✭✭✭✭

If you send it in my bet would be that you'd get a 40, and I'm not really a betting kinda guy. At that level if I had it I'd like it graded and slabbed.
