40 years ago: Post a Modern Commemorative...

40 years ago in 1982 the modern commemorative era started with the Washington half dollar. While IMO many of the modern commemoratives are unattractive, there is no question that many are also quite attractive. Post a modern commemorative design that you like. Use PCGS's list of modern clad, silver and gold commemoratives to determine what is acceptable... e.g. no bullion coins, State quarters etc.

    Good! For some reason I know you wouldn't be posting a damaged coin (rim reeding hit) from another coin.

    I love Modern BUT sometimes I felt somewhat better if they stay in the closet. If you know what I meant!?! 🤔

    Hi all, I am just leaving this comment to try to revive the "Post a Modern Commemorative" tread vibe. With all the new one-year only Semi-Sesq and privy hunting going on, modern commemoratives have drifted into obscurity.

    FYI I'm also actively collecting them, because I think they are underappreciated both for their design and relative obscurity with new collectors. -and more importantly because I think they are both a piece of history, and a piece of artwork - some with very low mintage numbers!

    Oddly, when I was talking with a high end dealer near me who deals in DMPL Morgans and such, I saw some of these in his display case. The dealer in the store told me that the "good Morgans" were out at a coin-show and they needed something to fill in the case. So they pulled a few of these out the Mint OGPs and put them out in the display case.

    He said they get these all the time, and aren't paying much for them because nobody wants them. They are, for the most part, 90% silver, so they are being bought by the dealer for 5 under spot-melt value.

    I asked what do they do with them, he said he buys them and sends them off to the wholesaler or smelter depending on who's paying more per ounce.
    Interesting. But only because there is an unknown number of these beauties being melted down simply because they are 90% silver.

    We collectors know that in MS state, these should have a premium. But the market doesnt know that. And dealers have to make their spread. If nobody is buying them over the counter, they won't put them out there.

    The secondary market is alive and well on E*Bay, and you can still pick up Modern Commems in OGP or even just capsules on certain bullion dealers sites.

    There are a LOT of modern commems out there. Both in design, and in mintage numbers. To that end I decided to research which ones had the lowest mintages.

    Honestly, the 1986 statue of liberty gold, the 1987 constitution and 2014 baseball were the high water mark of the series. I will say the 2025 marine corp coins are better than the 2005 ones.

    2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Silver Dollar Mintage Unc: 38,728 Proof: 218,751
    I sort of cheated and pulled a stock photo of this one. I have it in my collection (Proof DCAM 69)
    Although its not the lowest mintage (many were low mintages for good reasons!) its one of the coolest designs. I really like the concave shape and the subject matter. Growing up, I remember the Moon Landing, which momentarily took the country's attention off of the failing Vietnam War and focused us on the possibility of a better world and American technology, knowhow and perseverance.

    Another very cool design. And if you use your imagination the Navy is taking on the Army. The woman soldier (WAC) is slapping the face of the sailor.

    I don't own this one (yet) but its on my list. My dad was a WWII veteran. The Greatest Generation..
