From what I understand, there are several entities laying claim to that shipwreck...

Yes, the galleon San Jose. It's funny how Colombia is announcing the 'discovery' of this wreck when it was really found by an American salvage team (Sea Search Armada) in 1981, and then promptly fell into massive legal battles which haven't yet been totally resolved. But there are billions of dollars worth of coins and artifacts aboard, plus it is one of the best preserved galleon wrecks around.

It will be interesting to see how many government employees start collecting Colombian gold coins in a very big way!

here's my plan... I'm gonna leave the old wife and boring job, settle down in a nice part of Cartegena with 3 teenage sisters, buy some ATVs to get around in style, and send out word that I'm buying coins from the wreck with cash

    what could go wrong?

Uh, that is Colombia! Not exactly a safe haven but you'd be happy until you weren't.

I've visited Colombia a few times, very beautiful country but you need to use common sense like anywhere else... The Casa de Moneda de Colombia in Bogota is an exceptional Coin Museum and the Museo del Oro has one of the most amazing collections of Pre-Columbian gold artifacts around
