A couple of $1 Morgan 1880-O

lilolmelilolme Posts: 2,741 ✭✭✭✭✭

So I have a couple of 1880-O Morgans still hanging around that are a little different. The 3rd one was sold.
Again not a photographer. Just old automatic camera.

First up is a 1880-O PL. This date is not so common in PL (or dmpl). But the PL are often kind of nice looking. Got this one as a 64PL some years ago but replaced it in the set with a normal MS. A solid PL but not close to a dmpl. The luster in the fields can verify that. Decent cameo. Overall the in hand look is a little better than the picture.

The next one was the first one I purchased and quite sometime ago (last century :) ). It is toned. In the world of toned Morgans it is way down the list. But for a 1880-O which are a little more difficult to find decently toned it is okay. It appears to be an end roll toner. Kind of grew on me with time.

Awesome coins and 1880-O is somewhat of a conditional rarity. A 64+ for this date is definitely nothing to shake a stick at, and with PL to boot.

Are these supposed to be in the sale forum?

I didn't get the impression they were sale - one can post photos of coins on a coin forum without an ulterior motive.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Nicely toned 80-O's are more than just tough, they're downright scarce. Nice coins.

Last summer I bought an AU (hairlined) 1880-O out of a Morgan pick bin for $32, and flipped it on Ebay same day for $50. It's not a huge win by any means but getting quick little flips like that is fun, and it helps that Morgans are generally easy sells.

In the world of toned 80-Os that is an outstanding coin.

The Sunnywood set is the best set of toned Morgans that I know, and even that coin is not as good IMO:

That 1880 O is a real beauty. That is one that, if seen at a coin show, would likely come home with me. Cheers, RickO

    Thanks for the comments.
When I bought the toned 80 O I was just stating the slab Morgan set and had no idea about how 80 O came with toning. Initially I was okay with it but as I stated it grew on me with time and seeing the lack of others compared to other dates. The PL was just so flashy that it replaced the toned one but still have both now.
