Maybe I’m missing something, but I’m puzzled that anyone would think there might be an S on the coin. Where’s the match between the eBay item and the CoinFacts picture beneath it?

There's either a discoloration or a blob near where the mint mark might be. So, people automatically fill in what they want to see.
Really hard to tell from the photos whether there is anything but a color variation present.

Not trying to be difficult, but your pcgs comparison picture is an example that has a different mintmark placement. Gotta compare apples to apples when you look for mintmark placements and varieties.
There is something but like they all said above is the boat you'd be in,,,,, to me looks like an S over S.
Then the front Liberty has got me thinking 🤔.
Just my opinion

You can't compare mint mark placement when one of the coins doesn't have one.

Fair enough on the PCGS comparison coin, so let’s forget about it. I see no evidence of an S mintmark (anymore than I do most any other random pattern) on the eBay coin. If some 1908 cents were struck with O-mintmarks, I believe that some observers would speculate that the coin exhibited an O, rather than an S.

Where I have circled is the correct spot is it not?
Even if it does look like something you'd be in my boat and trust me nobody wants to be in this boat ⛵ only results in being,, well as stated above but now it's you.
Thanks
Pretty close, but for the size, shape, angle and placement.😉 I see two C’s or an animal’s head at the top and a sideways creature’s head or teapot beneath it, as much as or more than I see an S.

Yeah without that coin in my hand I can't get us any better pics and I do agree,,, I'll help explain.
The S mark that's on top is almost touching the stem area, then at the bottom of that S is the other.
I agree with your animals statement but those are normally in the field of the coin & not where the MM goes.
Also those marks could be not "raised" as normal marks would be.
Yes sir I did juice the image "guilty 😂" I think the option was called freeze 🥶 but I'll check
In my opinion
Thanks

Perhaps emeraldATV could offer us an opinion.

I'll have to do animals and of course the 1978 Horitz S under the D LMC,,, that way you all will know the full story.
After all I'm already in this boat esp with the 1793,,, let's shoot for the moon shall we
Thanks all

Looks like an S.
I would say no, based on the pictures. In hand, under a scope.... could be a different conclusion. Cheers, RickO

I think not. If you're convinced it's an S, good luck convincing anyone else.
I definitely think that is an S
Does not look like an 'S' to me.

Me neither. Way way too lightly impressed for a mintmark to even be considered.

good luck ... if you did not pay much over 1908 value, you did not lose much.
I don't think we know who bought it
Here is the “S” I see
This coinfacts coin photo example has the mintmark location close to what I’m seeing on the auction coin
Below are two low-grade examples - an NGC G6 and a PCGS VG8. Look how easy it is to see the mintmark, when it’s actually present.

A VF(ish) 1909 and a 1908 with environmental damage for $26? Not the kind of cherries I'd be picking. But then, that's just me.

So this one matches except the S marks one being not raised, in my opinion.

& would be the opposite & I'm thinking flattened marks not raised on the coin posted, of course just my opinion.
Thanks all
