It was worth 10 bucks to the seller, because that's what a willing buyer paid for it. What it's worth to you is what you can get for it. Having fun sometimes costs money, time, or even effort. if you're having fun and it's worth whatever it cost, then what does anyone else's opinion matter?

Hey, it's still worth a quarter or maybe two. Yeah, you overpaid a bit I think. Can't tell by your pics if it's uncirculated, if so, then it's worth a bit more and perhaps even the $10.

Mid-AU imo, apparent wear on the lapel, cheek and shoulder. A nice type coin.

Overpaid, probably worth less than a dollar not being a full UNC. Could have put your $10 towards a much nicer Lincoln Cent IMO.

The Red Book would have come in very handy here. Please, if you are really interested in coins, take your time to gain more and more knowledge, and when that comes, you will be able to pick out better and better value for your money. I am 18 years old and don't have a big budget to work with, but I've been collecting and studying coins for nearly 10 years. I have bought some truly excellent coins for quite cheap. They are out there. But you need to put in the effort to learn first.

Looks like a reprocessed AU from the photo, not worth $10.

This. If lucky it might be worth 10c.

I’m in no way trying to discourage you from the hobby, but looking at your posts, dude you really need to make better coin choices. Look I like the steel cent but no way that coin is worth 10 cents never mind $10 dollars. You really need to read, stop watching you tube and going on eBay. Get yourself the red book/mega red or even the blue book. Get a few slabbed coins in various grades and see how they were graded. Compare that with the PCGS coin guide /coin facts and see if you can grade them accurately. Look for details like harsh cleaning, corrosion, environmental damage. And then maybe you can then go on eBay and buy some coins. And don’t be afraid to pass a coin if it looks cleaned or overpriced. And finally eBay prices are higher than you get locally or on other internet sellers so use eBay as a last resort.

  • hfjacintohfjacinto Posts: 874 ✭✭✭✭✭

Look here is a low priced set of 3. Accurately graded. https://www.ebay.com/itm/165417586264?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=v2Rm6ZBGQ4i&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=gu_6qpj-q4g&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Even if you purchased raw and graded them yourself would cost you more than the price. And it’s a best offer. I would offer $50 or less.

Tough love here, but you asked........ and it's useful information if you'll learn from it. We've all done stupid - that's why it bugs us so much.

The advice above is very solid and I also recommend you get the Redbook. It is a good beginning and gives you a complete resource for coins you may find and consider. Also grading instructions. Cheers, RickO

If you think it’s a proof you should get it graded and pay extra for expedited service as it will be worth thousands if not tens of thousands if it’s a proof steel cent.

I posted the image out of the Red Book above for everyone to see.
If the coins was to make a grade of MS-65 or higher then the deal would be to bad, but the only way to get that official grade is to have it graded, and what's that going to cost for the one coin?
What if it comes back a MS-63?
Here is the real deal, its $10.00 and you really like the coin, the later pictures would indicate its a pretty nice coin.
That means you didn't get HURT so, that makes you the winner :)

Go to B&M coin store. Ask to go through box of pennies in 1-1/2 or 2 inch holders. $10 will go a long ways hunting for coins this way. One should be able to buy steel cents, some rather nice, from all three mints, 25 cents each up to a few bucks. Lots of entertainment bang for the buck in 1-1/2 or 2 inch dealer boxes.

Look at lots of steel cents in dealer boxes and one will learn what a processed one looks like.

Come on people, a $10 lesson is probably a lot less than a lot of us have spent when we first started out. Coin critique is fine but to bash an individual for a mistake is just not respectful for anyone.

The OP didn’t know it was a loser he just took a chance and you are lecturing him for gambling $10. Are you serious? If it was a hundred or more I would understand better your thought process.

The OP has been given some excellent advice over the last month or 2 from many experienced members. However, he fails to take any of it.

There are only so many times someone can hold out a handful of pocket change and PMD, and ask if its valuable before you start shaking your head. Read a few of his old posts and you'll easily see why some members have given up on him

    Well, take me for example.
A couple of years ago now I had worked my Lincoln collection down to one missing date/mint mark coin and that was the 1909S-VDB (that was before I came to this forum)
I thought I had made this great deal, I mean I got what I had figured to be a $1,000 coin for $500.00 GREAT RIGHT?
Wrong! it was a counterfeit although about a year later I did get $200.00 of my money back.
And like some others when I first came to this forum to get some advise (help) I crash landed on an alien planet that didn't leave survivors :D
But, in the end look at what me buying that one counterfeit did and where I'm at now.
At best here its just a $10.00 learning curve, all is good ;)

I understand that. What I don’t understand is why they decide to ridicule instead of just not responding to the thread? A lot of people today just have no respect for others. It seems it's easier for people to condemn than it is to enlighten!
