Thoughts on how this happened?

Looking at the true views, it looks like a nice coin with only a minor bit of tarnish on the ear and cheek, small enough that ricko might let it slide.

Now fast forward to a recent auction when it was photographed in the slab...

    I would guess it has 'turned' in the holder. Look at the 1 in the date. Both images have the disruption of the field in them. Besides the stuff on the devices there appears to be some more fog/haze at the rims on left side. Reverse is much closer.

    The 'discoloration' on the forehead, hair, cheek and ear are in prime focal areas, and ugly. It is an otherwise very nice Morgan dollar coin. It does not appear to be a normal tarnish... I would consider sending it to PCGS for potential restoration. Might be something they can remove without hurting the under surface - maybe not. Worth a try on such a nice coin. IMO Cheers, RickO

    It may have been dipped and not properly washed.

    You can see early stages of the color in the TV. Likely time and handling are the factors here. Possibly turned.
