A cent made in the year 953 - that is spectacular

Impossible! The United States of America wasn't a recognized country until 960 AD, and Abraham Lincoln wasn't even born until 973 AD--twenty years AFTER that coin was struck. Nice try though.

Agreed - the inflicted damage probably lowered the value of the coin by a sold 1/2 cent.😉

Nah... with copper at $4.28 per pound, it still melts around 3 cents.

Yes, but it was worth 3 1/2 cents before you ruined it.😄

    Lol.

    Is it ruined or enhanced?

Depends. Did you do it inside or outside the mint?

It took me about 30 seconds. I grabbed a 1950's wheatie...they tend to have short initial ones. I took the jewelry screwdriver from my desk drawer and shoved it into the one. Now, I hit a little higher than a meant and it needs to spend some time in my pocket to smooth down the rough edges...but I'll settle for $50. You should be able to now get some sense of how it happened along with all the other sharp hits that the coin took.

I’m so sorry @jmlanzaf. I need to see this on a cracked PCGS MS67 RD with True Views so we can see the close up before pictures and to confirm it is the same coin. 😈🤣

Plus now it’s definitely Etsy material. Many sellers there would label it as a copper work of art for a few grand.

Too many people listing coins like this on eBay, trying to pass them off as legitimate errors. And when I try to inform them about the coin, they don’t want to hear it and respond to me as if I’m an idiot that has no clue what he’s talking about. I’ve been collecting coins for 48 years and selling for the past 20 years, and I’ve specialized in rare die varieties for the past 25 years. I hate seeing this hobby being trampled by newbies with little to no feedback. Most of them have no interest in learning about coins. They’re just listing junk, at very high prices mind you, with the hopes that some unsuspecting uneducated buyer comes along and makes the mistake of purchasing their junk. They have no respect for the hobby whatsoever, and that really pisses me off. Some go so far as to telling me that I should educate them on what they’re selling. Not my responsibility! There are plenty of resources available to learn about coins and rare die varieties. I was always told that if I wanted to get involved with any hobby, “buy the book” first. That is the responsible thing to do. Seems like many people nowadays don’t want to take responsibility for anything. It’s always someone else’s fault or problem.

This is the Youtube generation... They see it on Youtube and it MUST be true. Some guy found a lincoln that had his head cut off and sold it in some live auction for 70$ so now everyone is doing it... They is constant sponsored content... What is your pocket change worth...
It is just part of the get rich quick scheme that is being exemplified by people now days...

Why work when you can search pocket change, watch youtube, and collect checks from the government... It is all a symptom to the true virus that plagues many...

LAZINESS and GREED. These guys act like they can find a rare die variety every time they search through their pocket change. It’s just not like that. I’ve specialized in rare die varieties for the past 25+ years now. In that time span I’ve found 2 doubled dies. Only 2!! An ‘83 DDO Die 1 and an ‘83 DDR Die 1. Trying to “help” them or “correct” them does no good. They’re only in it just to make a quick buck(many times it’s hundreds or thousands of dollars). They have no ethics and certainly couldn’t care less about the hobby itself. It absolutely disgusts me. And eBay lets them get away with it. When I search doubled dies on eBay, I swear at least 98%+ (and I’m not exaggerating) of the coins listed per page are not die varieties. Mostly strike doubling or die deterioration doubling.

Or pretty much any coin that sells for above face value or bullion value. There are so many gullible people out there who think a 1916-D dime should be worth more than $2 melt. P.T. Barnum was right!

@jmlanzaf ... Thanks for your contribution (one cent, damaged) ;) Unless one actually witnesses, or performs the damage, the actual cause will likely never be known, and can only be guessed. That is why the letters PMD cover such an array of possibilities. Cheers, RickO
