Puerto Rican fleur-de-lis counterstamped US coins..

jayPemjayPem Posts: 4,081 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was discussing these recently with @pursuitofliberty, and then as luck would have it, one found its way into my collection yesterday... or at least I think it's one 🤔

Ive unearthed some interesting info but I'm wondering if anyone here collects these or knows much about them?

I have no information on the counterstamp. I lived and worked in Puerto Rico for two and a half years... never saw any coins with that stamp. Cheers, RickO

Puerto Rico had nothing to do with France. What makes you think it has any connection with Puerto Rico?

here is a portion of the write up Sheridan Downey gave to a coin in his Mail Bid Auction # 52. It was a coin lot #120

"Until the late 1850s, coins used in Puerto Rico were from many different nations, but primarily Spanish-American silver. In 1884, Louis Daban, governor of the island for Spain, issued a decree that mutilated and holed coins could be turned in at treasury depots and stamped with fleur-de-lis markings – apparently the marks varying slightly in style, according to what area of the island they were intended for use, the areas being Fajardo, Guayamo, Ponce, Mayaguez, Arecibo, Viques and San Juan."

    Here is one of mine:

    Nice! Looks legit.
The ANS has several of these, with a handful on Seated quarters of the 1850s.
Here is one of the coolest we have: 1884 Puerto Rico countermark on an 1800 Draped Bust dollar, ANS 1913.130.35

Here's more from the ANS collection (plus some of Puerto Rican coins I couldn't weed out). We have others yet, but just aren't photographed.
You'd probably get more appreciation for such a coin in the World/Ancient forums on this site. Either way, love it!
