what happened to his face? that just doesnt look right. and the color?
Processed and replated?
Yeah, I think it's replated.
Looks like it would go 68 before the luster went missing. Did it?

.
i presume, it is damage from plating or the like. i would have expected a different genuine code, for some reason.

Ouch! And that's why I hate going first! 😢 ☹️
.
fwiw, if we graded plated war cents, i'd for sure call it a 66!

Thanks, I knew I was close! 🤣
I am not convinced it is due to plating (the 98 code), as I see damage on the rims.
I see an area of possible cleaned corrosion on the reverse.
Wow... I didn't see that one coming! I see the funky color/toning (or lack of it in this case) but the only real damage I see is the rough patch on the reverse. I attributed that to die wear...

I kind of like it. My first thought was that maybe a rusted die or perhaps a rusted blank that had been cleaned. The reverse makes me think the die was worn due to the ghosting of the U in United.
Of course, I could be totally wrong. I still like it for some reason.
First casual glance, I was ready to say MS65... Then I saw the old corrosion on the reverse, and marks on the obverse... Then I started to think it was cleaned and replated. Cheers, RickO
Whatever it is, I’m not a fan. The real thing in high grade is brighter than this piece. Given that PCGS gave this a holder, I guess it’s genuine, but counterfeit did run through my mind. The Chinese will make anything.
Yep. Including making us all angry.

I have a MS65 that looks better so no offense I hope it's not graded higher. I don't know if it was a bad photo day but it looks re-plated or reprocessed as I sometimes see them as described. Abe's beard also has something going on too. I don't know the grade so just going with details on this.

Possible plating.
