Choosing commemoratives For My Type Set . . .

Russell12Russell12 Posts: 261 ✭✭✭✭

I need to choose 4 commemorative half dollars, and I want them to be meaningful. I am thinking maybe the first one of each era (1892 Columbian and 1982 Washington), then maybe the 1926 Sesquicentennial and wait for the 2026 Semiquincentennial, Any other ideas?

I built a set representing states I lived/worked in over my career. Nine coins. There are many possible themes... You could make it meaningful to either your travels, family or other interests. Cheers, RickO

I would pick 4 you find most attractive or historically significant, for example Connecticut, Antietam, Gettysburg, Oregon, Lincoln or whatever appeals to you. The sesqui half is notoriously flat and unattractive in my opinion, and the Columbian is too common.

1921 Pilgram has an incredible high relief reverse and the Oregon trial is another “pioneer-themed” example.
The classic comms are more fun to collect than the modern crap, imo - that said I have several of them!
For the modern ones the 2001 Buffalo and the 08 eagle are my favs.
The 2016 gold walker ain’t too shabby either.

    My choices also here's why
Oregon, some much detail and although there are many, they still are one of the most admired coins
Bay Bridge, OHHH that bear.............he's beautiful if you can find a really really nice one
Gettysburg, Well I meet my now friend Winesteven when he outbid me on this coin a few years ago, lost the coin but gained a new friend!
I would also add the PANAMA PACIFIC to this group

    Good luck

My votes based on design and desirability are Pan Am Expo, California Jubilee, Hawaii, Sesqui, Texas Trail, Bay Bridge and any really nice toned coin like:

My first commems were a couple of cheaper ones - Columbian and a lightly cleaned Monroe. I didn’t find either particularly appealing and now I have:

    San Diego
    Oregon
    Texas
    Stone Mountain

I like these designs very much and they aren’t expensive in MS64 or 65.
As mentioned above, a Pilgrim or California would also be great choices, though the latter is pricier.

Always a tough decision. I have 4 in my 7070 and still not sure that it's right.

Hey, I resemble that remark :/
Actually, the Columbian design is just ok, what i like about mine is the toning.

I know they’re common, but I love the Columbian Commems.
@JW77 that is a real stunner!

I still don’t like the design but yours is a beautiful example!

The Gettysburg marked the turning point of the Civil War and a 75th anniversary that pushed for national unity. The Oregon is considered to be the best design. Those two tops my list.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I love this series and there's not a ton of awful choices although there would certainly be some unpopular ones. I love the designs of all of the above but I like the animal theme ones also. Wisconsin and Albany and New Rochelle are all great. The Lincoln is really stately and nice if a little restrained obverse and reverse as well.

Probably won't fit. As they only dollar it's significantly larger than all the other 50 cent pieces

@lermish makes a good point with the Illinois - Lincoln. It is a great design with a nice eagle on the reverse.

Your choices make sense, but other than the Columbian Half, I'd pick the 3 classic designs you like the best.

Also great!!! Even the eagles are really good. I know some people have mixed feelings but I really don't think there's too many clunkers in the set. One of the reasons I'm a collector of them.
