1977-S Kennedy half is this a special strike?

I found this some time ago. I was cleaning off my desk and found it again has anyone seen this before? Has a satin finish to it.

@Type2 ... I have not seen one of those before.... Is it the lighting or does it have a golden tarnish on it? Cheers, RickO
I'm looking forward to more information about this one. Unless it was altered after leaving the mint, it appears to be something special.

It appears to be a 1977-S Kennedy half proof that was sandblasted and then toned after it left the mint. It was a post mint alteration.
Is the gold color just the lighting or is the coin really gold in color?

That was my first thought as well. (Or maybe chemical etching).
Otherwise, it could be a new discovery that's too good to be true!
Bought from blue moon coins it was a dry run before the 2009 reverse proof spectacular L@@K!!!!
Ya it's cool looks more like palladium gray in hand. But does have the clad edge. Maybe I'll send it in and see what it is. What I can see if it was sandblasted not one part on the edge was hit I've looked at every Reed. Well I guess I'll send it in we never know.

There is no need to send it in. It has been sandblasted. Here's a piece of sandblast proof gold for comparison:

The mint did not sandblast any coins after production in 1977. An interesting post mint alteration though.

PMD. Chemical antiquing, most likely for a jewelry piece. Seen these before except this time they chose a proof single to do it on...

Looks like it may be but it's only $30 dollars and I still have 8 free subscriptions so why not.. 😉

It didn't leave the mint like that.
You can always access mint records through the Newman Numismatic Portal to see if they were doing any experimental halves in 1977. My guess is they didn't, but doing a little research seems like a better idea than randomly and needlessly throwing away money, IMO
Even if it comes back from PCGS with a weird denotation, I'd be a buyer!

That was done post-Mint.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I too believe that it is a sand blasted coin.
Can't wait to see what the outcome is.
